We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Adrienne Scott-Trask a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Adrienne, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
Success is funny. I am now at a point in my business journey that when I first started I would have consider myself “successful”. My business is out of debt, bringing in great sales numbers that are consistent, my business fully supports my life financially and we are about to grow and expand into our first brick+mortar space and hire numerous employees and grow to another new level. I am the most exhausted I have ever been in my entire life. Success takes drive, passion and a work-life that most people could never even begin to imagine. It becomes your everything. You eat, sleep and breathe it. Excuses and challenges are simply road blocks that you have to figure out your way around while most people would just give up. Success from the outside looks like it’s an overnight process when it’s really years of blood, sweat and many tears. So many ups and downs. Once you hit “success”….the challenges aren’t over and it isn’t always smooth sailing. Staying afloat as a small business owner is insanely hard. Especially over the last three years. Being a small business owner is the most challenging and rewarding thing I have ever done but being “successful” as a business owner isn’t for the faint of heart.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I own Electric Dream Boutique, a big pink fashion truck in Denver selling women’s clothing and accessories! We love fun, colorful pieces and our slogan is “for girly girl’s who drop f-bombs” so you know we have some very sassy pieces and a curse word or two on the truck. I moved to Denver from Toronto almost ten years ago. I am a trained fashion designer. Fashion and clothing is my expertise and passion. I love finding comfy, cute pieces that make you feel absolutely amazing. My goal is to find you your favorite piece in your closet that you go back to over and over again. Or that special piece for an occasion that is memorable and that outfit is part of that memory for you! When I first moved to Denver I saw a serious need for shopping that catered to “new Denver”. With so many people transplanting from major shopping cities, Denver didn’t have a lot to offer in terms of great shopping and I knew if I was needing something….many other women in the city were probably feeling the same way!
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Our truck (Beatrice) is our everything! Because we are such a unique way to shop, our bubble-gum pink truck attracts people just because of our set up. She is bright and bold and attracts people from a mile away. People are always intrigued and want to check out what it is. As a result, we gain a wide variety of shoppers and have had to expand our target market in terms of who we buy for and cater to! People say retail is dying but I believe that couldn’t be further from the truth but what you offer has to be unique and an experience. Retail has to be an experience these days. It has to be exciting, fun, interesting and different which is what has been the main reason for our success. People love shopping out of our truck! You have to “follow our journey” on instagram to keep up with us, see our new weekly arrivals and find our schedule to find out where we will be next! We aren’t a normal store! We have gained quite the following and created an amazing community with our little pink truck!

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I will be very honest, social media was not my strength in the beginning. I used it for our business but sparingly and hated being on camera for anything. I was probably “behind” in utilizing social platforms until the pandemic hit and our business had to pivot. Without social media, that time of our business-life would have been awful. I learned how to sell through “try-on” parties where you could order directly through instagram stories. Through this experience I became obsessed with learning how to utilize social media and saw how influential it could be. I also really learned to love that part of our business as well, creating content has become one of my favorite parts of my job and in all honesty I wish I had more time and energy to focus on it! Through the pandemic, we re-built our website, I started modeling for the site so I could get new stuff online quicker and we started doing weekly try-on parties that linked to our website so you could order easily through that platform. I also started posting our schedule weekly so you could find the truck easier. Instagram, our website and facebook became tools to find everything you need to know about how to shop, where we were and to be able to shop with us all over the country without even shopping the truck! Our online growth was late, a lot slower than most companies but am proud of the following we have created and keep learning as we go!
