We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Adrienne Johnson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Adrienne thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Any thoughts about whether to ask friends and family to support your business. What’s okay in your view?
If it weren’t for my friends and family, I wouldn’t have a business. They were the ones who saw the talent in me, encouraged me to decorate other spaces, and when I finally started my business, they lined up to be my first clients. I believe it’s totally acceptable to ask friends and family to support my business because there are so many levels of support. Whether it’s interacting with my social media posts, referring me to other potential clients, offering to lend an extra hand on my organizations projects, or simply praying for my business –my friends and family have done all of these things and more. Sometimes I ask for help. Other times, my friends and family proactively offer to assist. I feel an appropriate level of support is whatever your heart allows. Everyday I ask God to help grow my business, so whenever I get a helping hand from a friend or family member, I I know my prayers are working. I truly believe when you’re destined to do or be something, opportunities will line up for you. So when I was hired to stage a home in Washington, D.C. with a tight staging date, I prayed for positive resource availability and low and behold, guess who showed up to help me make this project a success? My friends and family.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’ve always had a passion for all things interior. For as long as I could remember, I loved interior decorating. When I was a little girl, I used to push furniture around my parents house until my little heart was content. When I turned 16, I used to spend money from my paycheck on home decor in order to decorate my parent’s home. Years later, I went off to college and decorated my dorm room, then after graduation, I brought my first home and decorated that too. My friends saw my talent and wanted me to decorate their homes. Then word spread fast! Soon there were friends of friends asking to help decorate their homes. I was happy as a clam to do it. I decorated many many spaces over the years. Finally the light bulb went off — I decided to create “Decor Haven by Adrienne” in July 2018. At last, my love of decorating spaces as a passionate hobby for the last 20 years is now a business. From dorm rooms to apartments to mega homes, I have worked on small scale interiors – as well as – large scale, open environments.
Decor Haven by Adrienne offers a wide range of services from partial room edits to full room makeovers, home organization projects to manage clutter, as well as, home staging for clients who are looking to sell their home. We provide second opinions to the doubtful homeowner, but can also provide full design control of a project. We pride ourselves in helping our clients determine their decor style, all the while, providing the most efficient and effective way to find decor items for busy clients who do not have time to dedicate to the process.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best source of new clients have been through real estate. Most people leverage a real estate agent to sell and buy a home. I have positioned my business with several real estate agents to bridge the gap of figuring out how to effectively showcase a home through home staging. Real estate agents have also passed the torch to me by completing the new home journey for their clients. After new homeowners are all moved in, I help them turn their house into a home by organizing and decorating accordingly.

Have you ever had to pivot?
I had to pivot my business during the COVID19 Pandemic in 2020, which halted in-person interaction. I had to figure out a way to make my business digital. I came up with virtual consultations and digital mood boards to help homeowners decorate their homes remotely. I was able to meet with clients near and far via Zoom to check out the space, get measurements, and discuss project goals. After I got all of the information I needed, I was able to mock up the space with suggested furniture and decor for them to purchase within the digital mood board. Those suggested items were hyperlinked; taking client to the actual websites to purchase at their leisure. When all of the items were purchased and delivered to their home, I’d meet with the client again via Zoom to facilitate the install with the client. I have worked with several clients completely remote; the furtherest was in Los Angeles, CA.
