Today we’d like to introduce you to Adrienne Figures .
Hi Adrienne, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My story began as a young girl. I grew up knowing I wanted to be a pediatrician. I knew I wanted to help people, but I really didn’t know how I would get there.
I came from a working class family. We weren’t rich but we had what we needed. We were expected to get an education because we came from a lineage of educators.
Now, what’s interesting about my story is I wanted to be a pediatrician but didn’t care for kids. Tell me how that’s going to work?! Lol
Now fast forward into where I am now. I decided to go into nursing because of my love for people! I figured if I would go into pediatrics later in life, then I would already have experience in the medical field. I’ve worked in some awesome areas like: Emergency Room, Hospice and Home Health, Nursing Home, LTAC, and Management.
Nursing has become a ministry for me. I literally get to watch God work in me and through me. I’m constantly learning that the science of medicine is healing; however, the ministry of Jesus is healing!!!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t been an easy road. I remember my first two semesters of nursing school, I was dealing with a mother who was ill in a different state. I struggled trying to learning the basics of nursing and manage the care of a mother, who was in the hospital but needed decisions to be made concerning her care. I had no clue on what was “correct” concerning her verses what I needed to question more of.
During this time of my early nursing care, I knew that I would always advocate for my patients because they need someone who didn’t mind standing in the gap for them. That’s something I sometimes regret about going through the process with my mother. However, God is kind! Even though I don’t get to help my mom, I get to help other women like my mother!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a registered nurse who currently works with Cardiovascular/Thoracic patients. These patients are those that are in needed of valve replacements, have different stages of blockage, those needing pacemakers, those needing to have portions of their lungs removed, or those that have a procedure to remove cancer from their esophagus and then stretch their esophagus to allow proper digestion of their food after surgery!
I’m the nurse who will pray for my patients, encourage them, and help motivate them doing their healing journey!
I’m most proud that in spite of everything I’ve been through (loss of my parents, failing nursing school after my mom passed, and dealing with grief) I’ve managed to get back up after each change in my life!
I don’t compare myself to others but I will say what sets me apart is my tenacity! No matter what, I find a way or should I say God makes a way every time!
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
I’ve had some amazing friends along the journey to help motivate me or speak life in me when I was ready to give up! They were or have been my biggest supporters and encouraged! However, the credit goes solely to God. It’s him who’s made sure I had the right support around me and I believed in myself like he does.
I want to thank Lashanda, Roshawnda, Talina, Erica, My auntie Carla, and many other family and friends!
