We recently connected with Adrienne Figures and have shared our conversation below.
Adrienne, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear the story behind how you got your first job in field that you currently practice in.
Those close to me know that my first professional job is nursing. I’ve been a nurse 13 years this year, and I’ve seen a lot along the way. Some good and some not so good. It’s definitely a journey that’s helped mold me into the woman I am today.
The way I got into the nursing field was because at the age of 5 years old. I wanted to become a pediatrician. I think this is what most little girl’s dream of at such a young age. I wanted to pick a career that would help save the world.
As I got older I realized that becoming a doctor was going to require some long years of dedication and I didn’t have that to give at the time. Lol. So, what I decided was “let me get into the field and if I’m ready to pursue becoming a doctor at a later date, then I would already have my foot in the door.
I’ve always had a love for caring for people. I guess it’s the nurturer in me. Taking care of people comes natural to me. Like I don’t have to think about it. It’s just in my DNA.
I absolutely love what I get to do. Whether I get to help people feel better physically, mentally, or emotionally, then I know I’ve done my job.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I’m a registered nurse of course, but I’m also an author, mentor, coach, realtor, artist, teacher, podcaster, and overall Commas.
One of the things that I love to do outside of nursing is mentoring our youth. I am the CEO and founder of an organization called Diamonds in the Rough, where I get to mentor, build, encourage, and motivate young girls to love every piece of them.
> What makes me the proudest with helping young girls and women, is to see how they have found their identities and ROCKED that! My ultimatum goal is for young ladies to find and establish their voice.
I know God chose me for the nursing and mentoring/coaching, because he wanted someone that would be able to teach and build people like Jesus did! I say my calling is bigger than me and I absolutely love what I get to do!

Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
Honestly, this question can be a catch 22. If I was choosing my profession based off of sustainability, then no I wouldn’t. I would do nursing as a secondary. When I first started nursing, I absolutely loved it. I was an ER nurse and over the years the field has changed.
If I had a choice, I would definitely choose to take care of people but in a more controlled environment.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
The lesson I’ve had to learn is just because I’m an African American woman, that does not mean I’m less than ANYONE!!!
Being in a Caucasian predominate field, it’s seems like black women have to fight a little harder to stay relevant.
What I’m learning is “I’m a powerhouse and there’s no need to change that for anyone!”
God created me for this profession because I belong there just like anyone else!
