Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Adrienne Chappell . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Adrienne , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
Because of my own need to find natural remedies to treat my skin issues. Researching and studying Oils of the Bible, herbs and their natural healing benefits, lead me to soap making and mixing butters, creams and lotions using the oils and herbs I had learned about. I’m always happy to tell this story because this is a spiritual journey for me. I feel as though I was and still am being guided though each phase. The vision came while sitting in church one day, not all that clearly at first. My motivation and excitement came once I realized my concoctions helped my skin and others noticed and asked for their own products to help them.
Adrienne , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I have always been a creative person. As a teenager, I gardened and was so fascinated plant’s and flowers growingfrom seeds.,I enjoyed cooking and baking cakes., I took sewing classes in middle and high school became very good at sewing, making clothes, purses, caps, pillows, blankets, and other fashion items. I was sewing for other people as a teenager, it was actually my 2nd business. (The first was cutting grass for a neighbor.) I continued sewing into adulthood making clothes for me and my family, maternity clothes, household items like curtains and pillows., i decorated tshirts, made jewelry and recreated broken and vintage jewelry pieces. Friends would bring me broken jewelry to remake so they could wear a keepsake of their moms.. Later, I had a vision to make dolls, then angel dolls with inspirational messages and scriptures. I made them from scratch. It was then that I realized I had tapped into and had been given a spiritual gift. It seemed anything that came to my mind, I could make it, and I usually tried. Being crafty and making things is just part of who I am. Chalises Heavenly Inspired Skincare business came about the same way, spiritually. I was having skin issues, and was receiving medical help for it. While it was helping, my concern about the side effects of the medication caused me to discontinue the treatment. When it came to my mind to research oils of the Bible, I had no idea why until months later when I decided to a look. It took a little while to realize and to put it all together,. It was challenging at first to find the oils in the Bible because there’s not just a list nicely placed on a page. All the while, I’m not thinking about a plan for a business. But I’m buying oils, putting them to the side waiting for my next instruction. Chalises Heavenly Inspired can now be found on Walmart.com as of July 2022.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
OMG, COVID 2020 taught me, better yet, resurrected my ability to pivot. In person markets and vending opportunities completely stopped. I’m grateful for the skills and abilities and forward thinking. There was a shortage of face masks and hands sanitizer where my son worked. So in an effort to help, I pulled out my sewing machine and started making face masks. Once I posted pictures of my work on social media, it became a thing. When the demand lessened, I stopped making them. I realize I am a pivot master. I always keep an open mind to new things, adding more to my business or even changing it altogether. Because there are always ups and downs, people’s interest change and so do trends. And I never shy away from trying something new or different. During a previous slowdown in 2019 and after a friend told me about a big rave with Sea Moss. I did my research and started making and selling Sea Moss Gels and other Sea Moss products. I still sell it now and it’s like one of the top selling product lines today. Chalises started off making T-shirts, then jewelry, selling purses, then hand making dolls. Each time was to increase my bottom line. It may be time to pivot again.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Fortunately and unfortunately as well, the best source of new customers has been in person events. As much as I wanted a total online ecommerce business that’s just not the way that works best. I found that people like the one-on-one, face-to-face interaction with Chalises’ (Team), and they love to “See Smell, and Touch” our products. That is something you can’t do online. For a skincare brand without the big advertising budget, even social media rarely brings about “new” customers. But once we’ve met, smiles are exchanged, and they’ve tried our products and new client is made.
