Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Adrianna Kenebrew. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Adrianna thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
Because I am a collage student I’m currently only doing photography part time. I started out small, and sometimes offered free sessions or giveaways to build confidence and showcase my work. The more I learned about photography and pricing strategies, I was able to raise my prices, and build clientele. A major milestone for me, was realizing that my time was valuable and my prices needed to match the value of my time.
Adrianna, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Adrianna Kenebrew. I am a natural light photographer based in the Houston area. I specialize in Senior, family, and creative portraits. Clients hire me to capture milestones and memories. I help choose the location, and assist with wardrobe selections when needed. I do my best to capture a person’s authentic self. My journey as a photographer started out differently than most people. As an infant, I was diagnosed with congenital glaucoma. Soon after, my parents were told that I was legally blind. However, this did not stop me from wanting to be a gymnast. I began to compete as a gymnast at the age of 7. From the age of 4 months to 17 years old, I endured 20 or more surgeries on my eyes. These surgeries included two shunt implants in each eye and two cataract surgeries. I have been on several prescription eye drops for since the age of 4 months. In 2018, my right retina detached twice within a 3-week period. I was told that in order to preserve my already deteriorating retina, I should end my gymnastics journey. As devastating as this was for me, I would not have picked up a camera had I not been forced to change my focus in life.
I started taking photos of family and close friends, and people started recognizing that I had an eye for detail, and a sense of creativity. I want my clients to know that I take pride in my work and cherish the opportunities I am given.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of what I do is not only getting to meet new people, but also having recurring clients.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Client referrals and Instagram are the most common sources of new clients for me.
