We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Adriana Faraudo a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Adriana thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
Growing up as the oldest sibling I always strived for perfection; people say that the eldest has to be the example for the whole family. I took that to heart. This was a goal I gave myself daily; and what was a goal once, became a must.
The problem was that one, I was always striving for something that will never come true, an empty goal, empty future: absolute perfection. I used to repeat the words “when I have this, when I look like that, once I’m over there, if I get here,” on and on. To my surprise, the goals died at the first ‘when’, it wasn’t going to arrive. There was never the perfect ‘when’, it was an empty space.
Realizing this took seven years of my life, seven years of creating pieces I never considered art or even creative whatsoever. They were just steps and tasks completed to get to the ‘when’ in order to actually start and do what I wanted. I was wrong. I was an artist and creative all along, I was hiding behind the blank canvas with a brush full of fear, and I painted it all over everything I made, not even wanting to start a new one using a different material. But after those seven years, something clicked. I said I will change materials, I will change mediums, and I will create.
That is when I took my leap of faith and moved with just a bag of clothing from my home country in Latin America to New York City, and decided I will start a new project from scratch. A project I now call “My reality”. A project focused on enjoying the present and creating without striving for perfection, just striving to connect with others and inspire them to do the same.
My new ‘when’ morphed into ‘now’. And as the transformation ocurred, I strived to take my ‘now’ and use it to spark other creatives hiding in the shadows of the empty canvas and coated brushes, to start painting with their ‘now’ too. And, together, create a gallery of imperfect artworks that creates the perfect definition of what an actual artist is: an imperfect human sharing their perfect perception.
Adriana , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My story is quite all over the place and if I sit here and tell you exactly how I got into what I do, I don’t think this would be considered an article anymore, rather a whole autobiography. No, but in all seriousness, I’m an award-winning art director based in New York who is extremely passionate about storytelling, details, and eye candy!
It all started with making my classmates’ Computer Class homework which consisted on designing emojis. I realized I found an odd satisfaction for designing and then I never stopped, but now I get to do it for a better cause! I transitioned from graphic design, to branding, to art directing for advertising campaigns, to now working on all kinds of sets and shoots from editorial all the way to narrative! I work in set design, set dressing, art direction, creative direction, and deck designing! I’m extremely passionate and hard working willing to do any type of job and help in any way that I can.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Seeing how people actually care about what you have to say and what you put out there. You never know who’s listening, watching, or feeling. But you might change lives by putting out the work you’re afraid of seeing the light.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
