We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Adriana DeHaan a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Adriana, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
A little about be , since I could hold a camera I have been taking photos . Photos of people , kids , animals , nature , myself . Id like to think I invented selfies . (Smile)
I was 24 years old and a mother to a four year old and 2 and half year old before I first took my risk and got in front of the camera . Now why was it a risk?
What was risky for me was putting myself out there . Trusting .
From a rough start to life of adoption trauma , healthy body image issues and more , I was quite scared to be with someone I didn’t know and get my photos taken . My head swirled as I went back and forth with why I should and what could go wrong; risks; would I be taking .
I know how I look when I take my own photos but most people prefer to take their own photos, no?
I did some instagram searching and I found a beautiful woman I had been following had posted a beautiful boudoir mirror reflection shoot.
I followed the prompts to find the photographer and found out it was a female photographer. I felt more comfortable starting with a female photographer for my first time .
More digging and I decided you know what , I’m never going to do this if I don’t message and pursue the shoot like I’m really doing it .
So I did , and by the end of conversation I was really excited to see what it’s like being in front of the camera .
Being vulnerable was a risk .
Being trusting was a risk .
Being in a new city I didn’t know well was a risk .
It was a risk of putting my step into my creating to choose not to ever do it again .
It was a risk for I might never stop !
I stepped into the studio and I relaxed . I felt safe. That’s the first feeling was safe. You’re safe, and that’s what helped me start my career up. A safe environment and a beautiful soul who took me under her wing and mentored me .
I risked a lot but in the end gained more then I ever could have if I hadn’t went for it , risks and all .
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
As I have mentioned I’ve been photographing with not much knowledge of what photography all entails and especially with cameras, for years , so beginning my journey into taking it seriously was new for me .
I learned very quickly modeling and photographing go hand in hand. I use what I know for photography to pose myself and my clients . I use my posing and spacial awareness for behind the lens .
My main focus originally was children , newborn , maternity and birth . But before I dove into those I decided I wanted to see what else was out there .
I found many different types of photographers and styles , but I wanted to explore sensual and artistic styled photography.
My picking this goes way back to my childhood of sex and expression of self was dimmed and shunned. Not just sex but the human body as a body , too.
This being said as I became an adult and then gave birth and had my daughters , my want to showcase the human body being itself and natural and so very different from each other . I felt beautiful pregnant and wanted to start replicating that feeling of being beautiful and nude and applied that to my love of boudoir , and implied nude .
Being art , is humans should really show it more . Sometimes you just need to be shown by the lens and photographer just how beautiful artwork we are .
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
My resilience came in when o battled my own mental and physical health and pushed through my own thoughts to not continue , or pursue my dreams. I wanted to not ever feel like I was starting to be unhappy doing what I love . I also was struggling with not knowing how to categorize myself because I want to dk so many things .
I then came to a realization, I am the creator of my own universe and I can do what I want to do .
I made a big change and moved and have slowly started getting myself back into my creative outlets .
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
For me it’s organic meeting people . Mostly through friends and word of mouth . At the beginning of my career I was more so the client and learning how to be the business was my goal in learning how to be the client also .
I have found a few apps that help connect photographers and especially Facebook groups and pages for creatives has helped especially with moving !
