We were lucky to catch up with Adriana Carney recently and have shared our conversation below.
Adriana, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
The story behind my mission is to bring to light the beauty in a world where there is often grief and heartbreak. It includes empowering others to be their true, authentic selves and to have unwavering belief that their life matters. As a mother of neurodivergent children, I have more clarity as to how I want to show up in the world for myself and my children. I want to find peace and joy in everyday life; and that starts with acceptance and love. I have a mission to raise awareness and acceptance in a world where we are often judged or shamed for not coloring within the lines. To show that love and support is not earned, but freely given and it starts with YOU. Being a mother of four, two being special needs, has taught me to appreciate life as it is and let go of societal expectations. When I was 12 weeks pregnant with my fourth child, we found out he was incompatible with life. Five days later, my two year old son was diagnosed on the Autistic Spectrum. Navigating multiple open heart surgeries for my son, while also navigating Autism for his brother, is challenging. Their resilience, fight, and unconditional love taught me very quickly, what some people learn in a lifetime. They inspire me to keep going and to empower others by capturing their light and sharing their stories.
Adriana, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
In the corporate world I am a sales coach, mentor and facilitator. I served on the board of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion for many years and quickly realized the disconnect between preaching DE&I and some of the actionable behaviors needed to implement a diverse, equitable and inclusive culture. I was thankful for the resources and connections made during this time but wanted to do more. Being a woman, mom of 4 and having two special needs children, opened my to a greater purpose. At the beginning of the pandemic, I started A.W.E.inspired, inspired by authentic women entrepreneurs. A.W.E.inspired is an online community for inspiration, motivation, empowerment and support. I helped purpose-driven women with tools, resources and strategies needed to stop the hustle and grind in business and embrace the ease and flow. While teaching others marketing and branding strategies, I continued to capture my children through photography and share our journey. All the knowledge, tools and resources from my experience in leadership and business, made for an effortless transition to photography.
Photography is a passion project for me. I embraced the ease and flow of my hobby and launched a new business, Adriana C Photography.
At the moment, I have been exploring different types of sessions and have not found my “niche.” I don’t really follow the industry rules and may one day stick to a specific style; but for now, I am enjoying the process and the people. I want my clients to love themselves exactly as they are and I love capturing candid moments. It’s not about curating picture perfect moments, but about highlighting a moment in time where you can remember the best moments. I love capturing kids being kids, with no expectations. I love capturing women and hearing the stories behind their beauty.
I am most proud of being able to use my art to raise awareness of social injustices or issues. Each portrait has a story, and I am proud to give people a means to share that story.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
In the world of social media, where there are so many marketing tools, word of mouth has been the best source of new clients. Clients referring other clients. As a mom of four, working full time in the corporate world, I can’t always keep up with the social media game; ads, sales funnels, email lists etc. I do make it a point to be present online via stories. I think it’s important to build trust with your audience and potential clients. Giving them a real look into your life through stories, helps. Sharing my work and always showing appreciation for my clients has helped my business grow. Though I may only share about 10% of my work, my clients share my work and tag me in posts. I also prioritize my clients, whereas in other industries freebies may go to new clients, if I host a model call, I will use my current clients.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Always being authentic and true to myself has helped build my reputation. I don’t promise things I can’t deliver. I’m transparent and I know I’m not perfect nor am I the best at what I do. I continuously learn from others and am not afraid to pivot or change if something isn’t working. I genuinely care about people and love what I do. Ultimately, I think that shows in my work.
