Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Adriana Brown. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Adriana, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
My mission at Adriana Brown Art is to make others feel seen, heard, and inspired through my artwork. During my years working in the mental health field, I witnessed the incredible healing power of art—whether through the act of creating or deeply connecting with an artwork. Supporting others has always been at the heart of what I do, both as a mental health professional and as a friend, family member, and community member. It feels natural to carry that passion into my business. What truly motivates me is seeing people connect emotionally with the art I create. It’s an honor to be part of those vulnerable moments and to contribute to their healing journey.
Adriana, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hi, I’m Adriana Brown, an interdisciplinary artist and owner of Adriana Brown Art. I’m based in Hannibal, Missouri but grew up in the Kansas City area where I studied art and psychology at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. I am passionate about the healing power of art and frequently blend my two areas of study. After working in the mental health field for several years, I have transitioned into working as a full-time artist and business owner, exhibiting and selling my artwork around the United States and instructing local art classes. Further, I am co-owner of Alliance Art Gallery in Hannibal, Missouri. I use a variety of mediums in my artwork, primarily working with acrylic and watercolor. I am committed to making others feel seen, heard, and inspired through my artwork.
I primarily sell original artworks, commissions, reproductions and greeting cards. It’s important to me to have affordable artwork for different price ranges to make my art more accessible. My artwork is inspired by themes ranging from breaking generational trauma to the collective experience of watching a breathtaking sunset. I absolutely love collaborating to create commissioned artwork that holds personal meaning for people. These often include home portraits to celebrate a new house, landscapes of a favorite place to commemorate, or portraits to honor loved ones and the memories shared with them. I’ve also created commissions to pay tribute to individuals who have worked tirelessly for justice, offering them a reminder of the impact and purpose behind their advocacy.
A great way to support my business is to follow my monthly newsletter, reach out for a commissioned artwork, and/or check out my online store. If you happen to visit Hannibal, Missouri, make sure to stop by our lovely gallery!
Have you ever had to pivot?
A few years ago I was injured in a car accident and wasn’t able to work in the same way as before. It forced me to reconsider my career. Although it seemed like such a bold move to finally take the step to working full time as an artist, in retrospect, it was a natural evolution for me. Working in the mental health field, I would often use art as a tool with my clients to manage stress or process trauma. Art was also a personal outlet, helping me practice self-care and reflection. Today, my goals remain the same: advocating for justice, helping people feel seen and heard, reminding them they’re not alone, and offering hope and beauty in a world where those things can sometimes feel hard to find. Although learning to run a business—managing accounting, marketing, and inventory—was a steep learning curve, I’m continually amazed at how this new chapter allows me to fulfill those same goals and meet the needs of my community in meaningful ways.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I think one of the best decisions I made was joining Alliance Art Gallery. After connecting with one of the gallery owners, I applied to be in their guest artist program. I was honored to be offered to join as a permanent member and co-owner of the gallery. They have created a deep sense of community and third space among art lovers and collectors. Connecting with these renowned, award-winning artists has greatly influenced my career and reputation as an artist. I am constantly inspired by their standard of excellence and am so grateful to be part of it.
