We were lucky to catch up with Adriana Basurto recently and have shared our conversation below.
Adriana, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
As a parent, all I’ve ever wanted is to be able to give my children every possible opportunity and see them happy. This includes having them participate in extra-curricular activities. I soon learned it was not easy keeping up with the busy schedule, especially when working full-time. I spent countless hours rushing to and from my son’s practices, games, school events, and more. It was always so stressful worrying if I would be late to pick him up from school or if we would make it on time to his baseball practices. In some cases, I had to keep him from playing due to my work schedule and because I could not find a care provider willing or available to help with the pick-up and drop-offs. I was stressed out and thought, there are parents like me everywhere who need help getting their children to practice! This is when the idea of Get2|Practice was created.
Adriana, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I received my B.A. in Business Finance in 2010, all while working full-time and raising my son. In 2013, I moved to Austin, TX, where I became part of the Business Affairs Office at Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin. In my role, I learned a lot about the various areas of healthcare, including how to improve healthcare delivery systems. This innovative model takes a proactive approach to delivering healthcare to communities. I could not wait to share my knowledge. In 2017, I became a Board Member of the East Austin Youth Foundation (EAYF). EAYF is a non-profit organization that offers youth sports, as well as free academic resources, and educational advancement opportunities to the youth of East Austin. EAYF believes every child should have the opportunity to participate in youth sports and have access to educational resources outside of the standard school curriculum. In August 2021, I received my MBA. All while still working full-time at the University, running the non-profit, and raising my son, now 15 years old, and daughter, now 3 years old. The struggles a parent goes through to obtain their education while giving their children the best life led me to want to continue to help families. This includes focusing on physical and mental health and offering educational and logistical resources that let children know there are no limits. This is why Get2Practice was launched. Get2Practice launched in August 2022 in California and Texas, offering childcare, transportation, tutoring, and athletic training. Whether students are sharpening their minds at a piano lesson or keeping their bodies in shape at football practice, Get2Practice will connect its dedicated staff of Care Coaches to families so that families can get to and from practice. G2P envisions a world where every student has the opportunity to participate in extra-curricular activities that develop healthy minds and keeps Students active.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
Get2Practice was founded by myself and our co-founder, Jerry Gonzalez. Jerry and I met in 2011 and hit it off immediately. Our love for music, sports, and staying active brought us together. We both moved to Texas in 2013 and started our lives together. Juggling our busy schedules was always a challenge, but we knew we didn’t want that to keep us from allowing our children to participate in extracurricular activities. We also shared a love for coaching and ran a non-profit that provided youth sports and academics (The East Austin Youth Foundation). We noticed that the struggles parents face getting their children to practice not only affected one person but, at times, could affect the team or organization providing that activity. It is hard when you have to see a family struggle to get their children to practice, or worse, drop out due to lack of childcare or transportation. Struggling academically is also another factor as to why a child may need to drop out. Creating Get2|Practice allowed us to provide a support system for the families we serve through tutoring, childcare, and training. Not only do we help children by getting them to practice, but we also support organizations seeking a resource for the families they serve. Jerry and I have now launched Get2Practice across several communities in California and Texas and have been able to make an impact on the lives of the families we serve.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
No doubt, our success is thanks to our Care Coaches. A Care Coach is someone who enjoys working with children (Care) and promotes a healthy and active lifestyle (Coach)! Our Care Coaches are the ones providing our services. It is not just about a ride to practice – it’s about impacting a child’s life and motivating them to be the best they can be. Our Care Coaches’ attention to the students, or children, in their care, goes above and beyond. We build relationships focusing on trust and mentorship through Get2Practice’s Impact Method. Our Impact Method includes Match, Meet, and Achieve. Care Coaches are matched with a student based on their backgrounds and the student’s need. We have a diverse group of Care Coaches with different backgrounds, such as military veterans, coaches, teachers, medical professionals, and collegiate athletes. When we Match and Meet with the families, our Care Coaches develop an Impact plan where students learn to set milestones and goals and work toward achieving those goals. I believe it is through the impact that our Care Coaches are able to make that we have built such a positive reputation in this unique market.
