We were lucky to catch up with Adrian Pollard recently and have shared our conversation below.
Adrian, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
They say hind sight is 20/20. That is actually true. For many years I regretted not stepping out on my own sooner. I mean look, the music industry has changed drastically and I can’t say it for the better. However, In the time that I have spent grooming my skill and educating myself I cant say that there would have been a better time for me to start than when I did. I’ve met many people during my long pursuit. Yet I’ve only met a few who I would say were actually beneficial. The truth is, had I started sooner I would have been thrown to the wolves. It is after all a dog eat dog world. Every week there is a rapper being murdered. Many industry secrets being revealed thus ending careers. quite frankly many artist that I’ve looked up to have left this world on less than high notes despite their many contributions to the world. I have an opportunity to see why it is that so many great men and women are usually over looked and unsung in life but honored in death. It seems that everyone wants their flowers while they are still alive but few are willing to plant any. We live in a time where in great works have become corny memes while bad works are highlighted as genius. I have become a firm believer that God’s “not yet” is not the same as a “no”. Patience is truly a virtue.
During my time of waiting I have not exactly been idle. I have honed my skills. I have found that it is not so important to always been seen and heard but rather to only be seen and heard when it appropriate and befitting. As an actor and a singer I often find myself gifted with roles that showcase my talents perfectly. I have also had opportunity to work with very beautiful and talented as well as some who were not so nice. Its all apart of character development. Something you can never have enough of i the sky is to truly be your limit.
Recently I have had the honor of being on a new and upcoming series airing October 6th on BET (plus ) called, “I Got A Story to Tell”. While I can’t go into too much details about that, it was quite a refreshing experience. I just love doing new things. To be a part of such an awesome cast, well you cant tell me that God’s timing is not perfect. Now will always be the the best days of your life.

Adrian, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Well for me it all started along time ago. I already spoke on that in a previous interview with you all. I started out singing in the church and still do actually. I was offered record deal when I was only 7. That type of thing really kinda makes an impact on a person. Interestingly enough it wasn’t until recently that I realized I am the only one in my family that can make such a claim. I eventually tried my hand at acting. So far that has turned out to be a very rewarding experience.
Some time last year I met a script writer on the set of a short film.He was the director that day. Donald Gray. Turned out he wrote a couple of plays that have aired on BET, “Stranger In My House” and “Man of My Dreams”. What really stood out to me about him was how passionate he was about acting. Now I am very careful about who I let pour into my spirit., but when I found out that he was an acting coach I made sure to reach to him and it has been a good investment. I would recommend that every actor and signer have coach. Someone you can trust. Key word is trust. I have met so many snakes in the entertainment industry. Its a wonder I haven’t given up behind all the time I’ve wasted on poor quality. Even when you’ve become a master at the thing remember that is important to stay sharp. A man may not be able to teach you anything new but iron sharpens iron. Staysharp.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me the most rewarding aspect of being an artist/ actor is seeing is actually seeing my own work. Not that I am not grateful for the experience, but I am not exactly a fan of stage plays. simply because most play writes don’t believe in recording. Imagine putting in weeks of rehearsal only to perform for a room of people who are likely to forget as soon as they walk away. With that being said somethings can be seen in ones own progress. I find that stage acting does require level of discipline that many film actors could benefit from. Being that it is live you only get one take. When I find myself not being able to walk away with footage I simply remind self that skills have been sharpened. Then comes the filming opportunities and I am all the more appreciative.

Have you ever had to pivot?
I had a learning experience once with a studio engineer. From the time I first stepped into her studio she wanted to talk to me about marketing. Of course she wanted money up front for her marketing services. Even knew that she would need proof that she knew what she was doing before forking out bunch of money. I had worked with her for about 6 months recording my project “The Lover’s Groove.” I had noticed that she was only consistent with begging for money. There were time when I would deliberately hit bad notes to see if she would catch it. As always she would compliment me and would even play on her phone like child during the session. One day I told her that I would not be interested in her marketing services. She then ghosted me and deleted all of my work. I regretted not getting my tracks finished before telling her this. Had I not been so honest I may have actually finished the project. There were so many things I had to learn regarding business and even still. While I was very angry I can honestly say, that really opened my eyes.
