We were lucky to catch up with Adrian Bush recently and have shared our conversation below.
Adrian , appreciate you joining us today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
Many things come to mind when I think of success; perseverance, open-mindedness, willingness to learn, and sacrifice. Perseverance means doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success. Having an open mind allows you to consider new ideas and information that you typically do not align with, but can apply to help better your success. In the beauty industry, new trends evolve every day. Your willingness to learn will keep you relevant with the newest trends and help retain your current clientele and attract new clientele. We all make sacrifices every day to become the best version of ourselves. Sacrifices were never intended to be easy as the saying goes “Work hard; play later.”
Adrian , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m Adrian Bush, a Makeup artist and owner of Glambeats, 26 years old and was born in the little town of Anniston, Al. How my journey began into the business industry is the number one question my clients ask and I always reply with” I was ugly in high school “ just to break the ice. But honestly, that is somewhat how it started. I wasn’t the prettiest girl in school and rarely noticed so I had self-esteem issues. I graduated in 2014 not knowing what I wanted to do when I went off to college and my dad said “Why not cosmetology school since you’re always in the mirror doing your makeup.” I loved that idea and enrolled in the Cosmetology program at Gadsden State Community College. In the semester I later found out they didn’t teach makeup but decided to finish the program anyways. Once completed I branched out on my own teaching myself and learning tricks and tips from my oldest sister who is also a Makeup artist. For 8 years I’ve been pursuing my dream of being a makeup Artist. I built my business from the ground up starting in college dorm rooms charging $25 faces to now charging $70 and up. I offer natural to full glam looks. This was not easy at all there were many days I’d have 0 clients. I continued to keep pushing myself to learn more about my craft and improve. What I’m most proud of today is how I’ve been running my business full-time for almost 3 years and a full-time mom to 3 beautiful children. I prayed for this moment of my life to happen and God is in the blessing business and I couldn’t be any more grateful. I’m so blessed to service every one of my clients because without them my dream job would’ve never come true. I learned the 3 C’s while running my business. Customer care, Communication, and Consistency. Those 3 things help me run my business. What sets me apart from other artists I have this bubbly personality that’s contagious if I do say so myself. I connect with every client whether it’s a laugh or even a therapy session and a karaoke concert. What’s that saying “what you see is what you get”? Not only does my work speak for itself I stand firm on how I represent myself and am known to be professional, nice and silly all in one. Makeup didn’t change me it made me see how a little goes a long way to enhance my natural beauty and that’s what I show my clients. I’m not transforming you to be different I’m transforming you to be confident in the skin you’re in.
What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
Indeed it did. There was a time when I was working three different jobs including my side hustle just to get my bills paid and take care of my child. I worked at T-Mobile for two years until the Anniston store closed in 2020. I stepped out on crazy faith and my side hustle became my full-time job. In my 8 years of experience with makeup, I was already building bonds with repeat clientele. I was more available to accept appointments every day at any time that was needed. My business was bringing in more income than working 2 other jobs and it was scary at first not knowing the what ifs. But to my surprise, my business has been flourishing over the past 3 years as a self-employed entrepreneur.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Consistently posting on my social media platforms is how I attracted current and new clientele. My siblings are my #1 supporters and continuously share my work which keeps people talking about my business. Facebook has been my main source of clientele, but tik tok and Instagram have also been a big contribution.
