We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Adreon Patterson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Adreon, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s start with something countless entrepreneurs have had to figure out on the fly – how have you dealt with the rise of remote work?
Being an introvert, I’ve created a space that allows me to work within my home by upgrading my workspace and gaining access to the latest technology. Plus. I’ve made myself and my work accessible online enough to have potential clients seek me out.
Adreon, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I had a natural knack for art and design to use my skills to craft work for others. Adding thee writing element allowed me to grow my creative arsenal. With that in mind, I decided to pour all my creative juices and works into forming Patterson Creative after working a decade as a part-time freelancer. Through my outlet, I sell my artwork focusing on the African diaspora. I also provide my art, design, and writing services to individual brands and small and medium-sized businesses to help them flourish and grow in the marketplace.
Having honed my skills as an artist and writer, I can provide them with the full creative experience. Whether it’s copywriting, social media, graphic design, or website building, I have mastered these areas through my time as a freelancer.
My proudest moment as an entrepreneur is having my work featured on a few websites and influencers’ timelines. the shouts let me know I’m doing something right. When it comes to clients, I feel like my work is a collaborative effort, and it’s about my creativity as much as it is about their name and brand.
We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
After graduating SCAD-Atlanta with my BFA, I went after some big companies seeking employment with no luck. After months of trying, I finally decided to become a freelancer, which worked out for me early on. I took a break before starting my freelance efforts up again after graduating with my Master’s. This time, I started working small by courting companies and individual brands before the pandemic brought me to a crossroads. I finally decided to take a chance on myself and make things official. I am still in the building process as I start to grow through referrals and family support. Thank goodness for social media as I have picked up a few clients through direct messages and unsolicited emails. My milestones have yet to come, but I do have a few prospects brewing.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Like many creatives and entrepreneurs, the pandemic forced me to re-evaluate my approach to work. Doing a traditional nine-to-five no longer served me as my efforts were benefitting someone else, not me. Thankfully, I left my retail job before the pandemic struck so I didn’t have to deal with the impossible demands and unfair treatment my former co-workers faced.
I took the moment and turned my career into a business for my future by registering my business and upgrading my equipment and technology to help me facilitate my client’s wants and needs.
