We were lucky to catch up with Adrain Hemphill & Tiara Johnson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Adrain & Tiara, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
A Good Thing: A Community Where Marriages Thrive
What started as a simple idea between two best friends planning a couple’s trip, quickly turned into something bigger. Tiara Johnson, married for over 20 years, and Adrain Hemphill, married for 15 years, realized there was a need for more spaces where couples could connect, grow, and have fun together.
That’s how A Good Thing was born.
We’re a marriage resources organization that believes every relationship deserves support. From workshops on communication and mental health to fun, laid-back date nights, we provide tools and spaces that help couples stay strong through every season.
Whether you’re newly married or deep into the journey, A Good Thing is here to walk with you with intention, joy, and community.

Adrain & Tiara, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Tiara and myself started A Good Thing LLC two years ago from a telephone conversation about wanting to plan a couples trip with some friends. We were talking about the things that relationships needed to stay healthy and strong. It all evolved from that because we understood how marriage can be hard with both of us being married for, Tiara (20 years) and Adrain (15 years).
Both of us married our high school sweethearts, so we experienced first hand what it looked like growing up with each other, and the struggle of still finding ourselves as teenagers into young adults. Tiara married when she was 19 and I (Adrain) married when I was 23, so it wasn’t like we had people our age in close proximity to lean on for support or advice.
Because of our personal experiences we wanted to create something for couples at every level in their relationship that offered resources, support and community..
We were able to plan a successful couple’s retreat in 2024, and going into our second year we’re set for our 2025 retreat in September. We have planned and organized workshops for both men and women, as well as the couple’s workshops.
We have created a community with other married couples and created a growing list of resources that couples may need, but never thought of. We’ve partnered with sexologists, family counselors, event planners and caterers. We plan group outings and date nights to local spots in the community to encourage couples to take time out away from the distractions of everyday responsibilities.
Ultimately we want A Good Thing to be able to reach further than just St. Louis. We want to create communities everywhere.

We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
Tiara and I met sophomore year in high school in 2001. My friend was friends with her, and we all shared a mutual love for singing and the singing group Destiny’s Child.
They had a singing group and they were looking for another singer, so I started singing with them. We sang all over the city of St. Louis with our school’s color guard, and we had opportunities to sing for local events. We became sisters, and we’ve been sister- friends ever since.
We’ve had our ups and downs, as all friendships do. But as we’ve gotten older, learned more about ourselves and each other, and experienced life, we’ve grown close as the best of friends.
Even in our own marriages I know that I can call up Tiara to get some advice on something and she can do the same with me.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
We are still growing our community, but we started off with 2 other couples trusting us enough to hear what we had to say, and attend our first retreat. We are now at about 14 couples in our community with 10 going to this year’s retreat.
Most of our couples come from word of mouth. They are friends with another couple in the community, and others have heard about us on our social media pages.
We had a workshop for men, and a guy attended because his wife saw our event posted on Facebook. Some of the practitioners that we have partnered with also refer couples that they know to us.
We are really working on growing our reach on our socials, and I’m sure that with that growth the AGT community will expand.
