We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Adonnica Genon. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Adonnica below.
Adonnica , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I first knew that I wanted to pursue art as a career after graduating high school. Art is a very “general” word to use for this field, however I knew that I wanted to be an artist during my lifetime.
Adonnica , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Adonnica Genon; I have been in the creative industry for 12 years. I am best known for my portrait and editorial photography. I also have experience in photo editing/retouching, cinematography, directing, creative direction, graphic design, and the coffee business! I’m originally from Detroit, MI (where I started to build my photography brand – and became very well known within my hometown). I have traveled and worked as a freelance photographer in Atlanta, GA, New York City, NY, and Los Angeles, CA – where I currently live. Photography is something I’ve been attracted too since the age of three; I just knew in my heart and mind that photography was something I wanted to pursue in life. Has it been a easy journey? Not at all. Many times I’ve wanted to give up…. Many times I’ve asked myself “Adonnica, do you really want to pursue photography?” But there is always something that brings me back to my craft. For me, photography is much more than just taking a good photo, it’s about the memory being captured, the story that’s being told, the energy and mood you feel from viewing the photo, and reminding others that if I can take leaps of faith as an artist and really believe in my artistic goals – you can too.
I recently turned 30 in January of this year and I still don’t have an agent.. I moved to LA two years ago and it’s been a very interesting journey to say the least. For the most part, with the help of my network and connecting with the right people, spending time sending out emails to the right people, and have unwavering faith in my talent and abilities – I have made great strides within the art field.
I also wanted to note that I am first and foremost a mother, that’s something that’s a constant in my life. I became a mother in 2018 and my whole world changed….parenting is a full time job within itself and I will let any mother/parent know that – just because you have a child does not mean you give up on your dream or goals. Let it motivate you to become a better person and really give your goals a chance. Your kids are watching you all of the time, and they will learn from you not giving up on yourself. Let them be apart of your “Why” for life.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative and artist for me, is the freedom and happiness that comes with creating art that makes others feel good, and also makes me feel good. As artists we can go through moments of darkness – moments where we don’t know what to create, what direction we should take next, and much more….ive learned to go with the flow of life. Artists can be complicated, we’re multifaceted, and sensitive about our sh*t as the iconic Erykah Badu has said in her music.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I want to see my work on billboards across the country and outside of the states. I want my art to influence other upcoming artists and to also live and thrive off of art alone…. I know to majority of people in society and majority of people in society that seems far fetched – however since I was the age of three I’ve always know that art is apart of my calling – I’m a true artist at heart.
I have big goals and dreams that I’m going to keep to myself however seeing my work on billboards and other store advertisements is a big goal for me. I tear up just thinking about me seeing my first major billboard – that moment. Is going to be monumental for me and my family.
