We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Aditya Dikka a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Aditya, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
Like many, I often wonder if starting earlier would have been better. I have been struggling with feelings of being behind in life. But now, I’ve learned to be kinder to myself, inspired by the wise words of Marie Forleo who says that you have to try to ‘adore your detours.’ I began my acting journey in my mid-twenties, while some others knew their path much earlier. After high school, I was interested in filmmaking, but at that time, it felt like an unrealistic career path. So, I pursued graphic design instead, earning dual degrees from universities in Indonesia and the UK. During my university years, I spent more time helping film students with their movie projects than on my own art projects. I also got involved in student council activities more than in my graphic design studies. By doing all these things, I recognize the importance of these experiences in shaping my confidence, presence, and leadership skills, all of which are key qualities for navigating the acting world. Had I pursued acting straight out of high school, the transition might have been too overwhelming for my younger self (I mean, you should have met me in high school; you’d understand what I was like back then. For him to dream of being an actor was a bit laughable). I might sound a bit mean to my younger self, but the point is that the kid just needed to take a little detour first to get ready to face it all.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hello everyone, I’m Dikka, and I’m thrilled to share a bit about myself with you. Originally from Indonesia, my acting journey in the industry led me to move to Los Angeles in 2021, where I’ve had the privilege of experiencing diverse opportunities. Most recently, I’ve joined an award-winning musical production “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum,” directed by Scott Borden. In the realm of television, I’ve had the pleasure of working on notable series such as “Shrinking,” “Hacks,” and “Grey’s Anatomy.” Sharing the set with incredible actors like Caterina Scorsone, Kevin McKidd, and Chandra Wilson has been an invaluable learning experience. Moreover, I’ve also had the opportunity to work in some feature film projects and also some other projects which have now been submitted in several film festivals. Apart from acting, I also do film editing and graphic design. What I’m really proud of is giving my best in every role I take on, whether on stage, screen, or behind the scenes.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I strive to inspire individuals who may feel ordinary or overlooked. Also, a significant part of my goal is to showcase Indonesia to the world. Hollywood often overlooks the vast potential of the Indonesian market in the movie and entertainment industry. Hopefully I would be able to change this perception by highlighting the cultural richness and immense opportunities that Indonesia offers.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
If I may, I’ll share a little confession: I’m not that resilient. I’m far from being a figure who consistently strives for excellence despite any challenges faced. When I encounter difficulties or tough situations, I don’t always bounce back in the snap of a finger just like that. Instead, I often find myself dragging myself home, curling up in bed, and scrolling through social media (which usually makes me feel even worse). It may not be the most inspiring story, but what I can proudly say is that I’m persistent. I allow myself to experience the emotions, feel discouraged, sometimes even depressed. But then on the following day, I continue to show up at my day job and take another step forward, even if it’s just a small one. Because as someone once said, ‘There is no one who has failed in this, only one who quits.’
