We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Aditi Hazra. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with ADITI below.
ADITI, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I grew up in an artistic household in India. As far back as I can remember and based on my parents’ stories, I have shown a passion for art since my early childhood. At home, I grew up watching my father experiment with different media, and most of the time, I would participate with him and create art at home. I enjoyed making art wholeheartedly. It was all I could think of when I was little. Additionally, I would accompany my father to art shows, workshops, and other creative events and participate in seminars, workshops or exhibitions. Being exposed from a young age, I realized that making art was something I wanted to pursue passionately, and I decided to make it a career choice for myself.
ADITI, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am Aditi, a multidisciplinary artist from India who resides in Maryland, USA. My artistic journey began in a unique setting, a household steeped in creativity and culture. This early exposure to diverse art forms ignited my passion for creation. The exposure I got through assisting my artistic parent, such as materials and the history of art, made me realize I wanted to pursue art passionately.
I graduated with a BFA and MFA in Printmaking from Kala Bhavana, an art institute founded by Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore in India, which was established to nurture creative minds while staying close to nature. My art school is internationally recognized and has many international students and artists from around the world visiting and conducting workshops; due to that, I was exposed to many different stylizations and contemporary art, which enhanced my artistic abilities. Being in this diverse setting and a natural environment helped me develop creativity during my undergraduate year. After my master’s, I worked in different professions for a few years. As an art educator, I decided to further my education and enrolled in a multidisciplinary program at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, USA. This experience gave me new resources and energy to enhance my studio practice.
My artwork encompasses print media, drawing, painting, and time-based experimental animation. Currently, I am exploring hand-painted paper cutouts, using ody gestural forms to connect with my childhood memories from India. My work is deeply influenced by myth, dance, rites, rituals, and a love of nature, reflecting a passion for universalizing the human condition.
I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to showcase my artwork in the USA and connect with art lovers here. The support and motivation I receive from them encourage me to continue my studio practice.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspects of being an artist are the connections. When your art piece connects with viewers, it shortens the gap, and we can share and experience similar things. Secondly, I feel a deep satisfaction when the work is completed because I am able to express myself and have the freedom to explore, experiment, and keep creating.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
The best support society can do is to incorporate art into our daily activities, for example, through education as a visual sensory function, appreciating art as part of a learning curve, and creating more career paths.
Supporting emerging artists through social media or acknowledging them on various other platforms.
Other aspects are collaborations, community mentorship programs, and having a platform for the artists to access spaces to create. Having an organization to give recognition.
The magazine offers grants, fellowships, sponsorships, more art galleries, regular art museum visits, and the publication of artist work.
