We caught up with the brilliant and insightful ADINA PORTER a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

ADINA, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s jump right into the heart of things. Outsiders often think businesses or industries have much larger profit margins than they actually do – the reason is that outsiders are often unaware of the biggest challenges to profitability in various industries – what’s the biggest challenge to profitability in your industry?

There are several challenges when it comes to my industry. One, there are several businesses since covid that sell all natural body products which makes it hard to stand out. Two, people are more willing to buy cheaper products that are bad for their skin than to pay a little more and buy products like mines. Three, it is hard to get your name out with limited resources in marketing and funding.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

Hi, my name is Adina Porter, the Founder and CEO of Sunshine Body Care LLC. I started my company as a Do It Yourself (DIY) project and to save our household money. My husband, Roger Porter would always get our shea butter from Michigan when he would visit. Over time buying the shea butter from Michigan would deem to be expensive. I started doing research and decided to make my own shea butter\body butter. I gave samples out to family, friends and associates and received rave reviews.

Sunshine Body Care hand makes all-natural body products. We offer body butters (you use it the same way you use lotion), body scrubs, bath salts, bath & shower bombs. Our goal is to improve the health of your skin and to add some self-care in your life by using our products. What sets me apart is the fact that I offer a variety of scents to enhance your self-care experience. The products I sell aren’t just for the purpose of making money but also to improve and maintain skin health. Sunshine Body Care is owned by me, a veteran and a black woman. What I am most excited about and what I love to hear are the reviews I get from customers sharing how my products have healed or softened their skin. It makes me proud to know I am making a small difference in the lives of others. I am where I am today because of the people God placed in my life to help me along the way. It has not been an easy journey and I have made a lot of mistakes along the way, but they allowed me to grow and have pushed me to do better. I’ve learned to be open to failure. Failure is what leads you to success. Success is not always about more money, but about growing from your failures and who you’re helping along the way. I also learned there will be days you want to quit and give up. Through my faith in God and my husband encouraging me to listen and read personal development is what helps me through the tough times. What I want the world to know is to be more mindful about your skin health. Read the labels before you purchase a product. If it has ingredients that you can’t pronounce, you might want to reconsider using it on your skin. I want people to know that your skin health is just important as your physical & mental health; you can’t have one without the other. Sunshine Body Care wants to help everyone have better skin health.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?

So far, the most effective strategy for growing my customers is utilizing social media. I make sure I post constantly and engage with my customers. I make sure I offer specials and discounts. Also rewarding your VIP customers is a plus. I created giveaways for email signups to engage more of an audience.

Honestly, there are so many times I just want to quit and throw in the towel. Then God sends me some orders or I get a positive review out of nowhere. What keeps me going is my faith in God and knowing how my products have made a positive impact on their skin health.
