We recently connected with Adena Helm and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Adena, thanks for joining us today. Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
I love being an artist! I can’t imagine being anything else. Not matter what I am involved in, volunteering, serving on committee or involved in any project, I go about it as an creator would. I see things from a different perspective it seems. I see what things could be or how things go together in a new way. I think art makes one a good problem solver.

Adena, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My first two years of college I was a voice major. I loved singing and performing very much! On the first day of my junior year I walked into an art appreciation class. I was amazed at how art was so much like music. It felt the same in my soul. I wondered if I could paint a song! A painting as a silent song. A visual song. All the different parts in visual form. Music has layers that help tell stories and express emotions. I wanted to try it! I changed my major that very day. I have been on an adventure creating art that work like songs. I have experimented with many different media and how to combine them like many instruments and voices in a song. During the time of Covid I started autobiographical comics and working in clay. The comics helped me think about perspective and observe things were accept as true. Are they true? Clay makes me dig down and think about literal vs figurative. Are things as they appear? What if they can be considered a new way. I am going to consider an idea and see what shows itself!

Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish I had known earlier that I didn’t have to know everything before I started! I can just get started and I will figure it out as I go. And if I like something, someone else will like it too. Trusting myself as my own resource!

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I am very excited about creating art in which I can express myself and not be swayed by what I think someone else what’s to hear or see. Authentically me. A journey of self discovery, self expression, my perspective.
