We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Adelaide Evans. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Adelaide below.
Hi Adelaide, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
I threw myself a birthday party where I casted my friends in a living room production of Drunk Wicked, and I’ve been producing drunk musicals ever since! LA is full of theater kids who decided to pursue film; as one of them, I was starting to miss the big Broadway childhood dream I thought I had to let go of to pursue a degree in TV Production: Writing & Producing and minor in Voiceover. I wanted to learn it all to prepare myself for my dream role: Showrunner. The plan was to create my own musical comedy series.
Performing the songs that taught me to sing with the talented friends I’ve made through Good Mythical Morning, karaoke, stand up & singer/songwriter open mics, and musical improv, I found a project that combined all of my favorite people and passions!
Adelaide, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I created a show where I’m able to cast and collaborate with comedians on a production that centers around us singing to tracks from a popular musical and improvising the scenes between songs!
I grew up writing songs and sketches. I was the theater kid in private voice, choir, acting, and dance lessons, from 1st grade through community college, where I studied musical theater. I moved to LA after graduating Summa Cum Laude from Columbia College Chicago, where I refined my videography and editing skills.
Upon moving to LA, I trained to be a security guard to get onto the Universal Studios backlot to network. I met the showrunner of The Voice, and was soon offered the Key PA position in their contestant department. I felt so lucky to be a fly on the wall in vocal lessons with the coaches. I loved working in TV Production, and then I decided to gain experience in TV Development at ITV Studios. By the time I transitioned into the digital space at Good Mythical Morning, I had a well rounded education in how to create, develop, and produce a show. Working for Rhett & Link has taught me so much about content creation, and I’m surrounded by some of the brightest people in the industry who have supported me and the growth of my channel: Drunk Lady Productions
I’ve spent most of my life on stage, so when I decided to pivot to learn the behind the scenes mechanics of studio operations, my family was shocked. I knew it was a very roundabout way of pursuing the career I wanted as a creator, but it’s a route that has given me the necessary skillset to run a show like this! Growing up, most of my family disliked musicals, so I hope I’ve created a show that can be enjoyed by all through the love of comedy and partying! My agenda is to spark curiosity within the audience; a lot of people in attendance haven’t actually seen the musical, and they leave wanting to see the real show. It’s fun for fans to bring their friends, to then see how well we were (or weren’t) able to get the plot across in the end.
I just released High Little Shop of Horrors, the remount of Drunk Little Shop, but High, I’m editing Drunk Sweeney Todd and Drunk Little Mermaid, and am producing Drunk Rocky Horror. You can check out Drunk Lady Productions on YouTube!
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
When I release a show, I’m the only one who knows how much work went into the project behind the scenes. When I look at the final picture, I see it all: the story behind the idea and the mountains climbed to reach all those views. It’s so satisfying being able to bring an idea from concept to reality, and I enjoy all the steps in between: writing the script, securing a venue, locking in a cast, designing social assets, promoting, directing the cast & crew, PERFORMING, and then editing all of that magic together, is extremely rewarding. I’ve created something that artists that I admire want to be a part of, and that feels very special.
And when things go wrong, I’m able to turn the hard times into a song; I write my own anthems and then share them with friends to relate. Bad experiences lead to tight fives. Creativity is a super power.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
This all started as a way to bond with new friends out here in LA; I just wanted to find the people who matched my weird haha. On a deeper level, art plays such a huge role in shaping our culture. We share the stories that speak to us when we’re introduced to new perspectives, sparking conversation. I’m passionate about creating a more empathetic world by representing women in a way that empowers us in society.
