We were lucky to catch up with Adante Watts recently and have shared our conversation below.
Adante, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The most meaningful project I’ve worked on also happens to be my most recent project: my short film “Read Between the Lines” (RBTL). The story follows a socially-anxious Carlos as he makes multiple attempts to ask out the cute Bookstore Clerk that he has a crush on, and was inspired by true events.
RBTL is the first project I’ve written and directed that was based on an experience from my life. Even now, watching the short film is kind of painful, because it’s like reliving it all over again. That lingering emotional trauma is trumped though, by the overwhelimingly positive response the film has gotten since I posted it to YouTube back in April. The fact that the film has been viewed over 1 Million times in such a short amount of time, and that the comments are full of people who relate so heavily to Carlos and to me and the situation as a whole means that, in the end, it was worth every ounce of embarrassment and shame.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My name is Adante Watts and I’m a Director based out of Atlanta, GA. I started my Production Company, Precision Entertainment, back in 2014. Precision offers production services that range from Development through Post-Production. It’s always been my goal to help shepherd in a new generation of content creation and storytelling. It really is amazing the way a slight change in perspective can alter the way a story is told, and that’s something I personally strive to push for more of. There are so many interesting stories out there just waiting to be told by equally interesting voices.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I’d say that the most rewarding part about being an artist/creative is the satisfaction of seeing something you created come to life. It’s especially rewarding when you were there from the product’s inception through to its completion. All of the projects I’ve made started out as simple ideas, some of them even fleeting: “what if there was a movie where…” or “what would happen if someone”. Being able to take that idea, expand upon it, fully realize it then share it with the world.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
My very first feature film was something I made in college and almost didn’t happen on several occasions. In fact, the film didn’t even start out as a feature. I had an idea for a short and I tried to make it over the course of about 3 years or so. For various reasons, whether that be actors dropping out last minute, locations falling through, loss of access to equipment etc., it seemed like the film was never going to get made. In the final instance where I decided to give it one more go, I figured I might as well go all the way with it and make it into a full feature length film. Making a feature film in general is hard but making a feature film with no budget and amateur-level experience feels impossible. But with the help and support of my cast and crew, we made it to the other side. My work ethic and desire to create and actually see projects through to the end, is a quality that I’ve been praised for in the past. Which is weird for me, because when I get to the point of starting production on a new project, very rarely does the thought of not completing it cross my mind. And if I can’t finish it, it doesn’t go away. It gets put on the shelf and revisited at a later date, when I have more resources and the ability to try and tackle it again.
