Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Adan Avila. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Adan, thanks for joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
Being a Creative Entrepreneur is fun because you can develop all sorts of creative skills without even knowing it. After graduation in 2020, in the height of the pandemic the school didn’t have their annual collections class fashion show for the graduates. Which meant that the exposure I would get from the show and school’s connections was gone. With that coming as a realization, I wasn’t going to let my work go unseen. During collections class, I worked around 2 classmates. After finishing school we decided to collaborate as a group to set up photoshoots for our collections. One of my classmates seemingly had experience with directing and the steps of doing a photoshoot. All I’m going to say about that is, the best way to learn is by seeing what others are doing wrong. Not surprising to say that we went our separate ways after some creative differences. All in all, a very eye opening experience. At the time, my now ex offered to photograph the shoot for me, not without before reminding me that he had no proper training but dabbled in it as a hobby. Understanding that I had to meet him at his level , we got to work. One of my classmates still decided to work with me to finish the project. I learned to run a model casting and to communicate with other creative and collaborate with them. Now after 2 years, here I am having directed several model castings and a fashion show. To being published on the cover of Teen Cruze as a photographer and just had one of my original Ad’Ann Designs gown on the stage of the Miss Houston pageant! I’ve learned all this from my professional experience as a fashion designer. If anything could have sped up my learning process, I would have to say confidence in my skills. We are by far our our own worst enemy, other people can hate on you or judge but still can’t do what you can. The most essential skills for any creative I believe are adaptability and resourcefulness.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
There is a saying that says, “ the only ability a creative person has is to create, everything else is learned.” As a fashion designer, in school we learned techniques the way their “supposed to be”. After graduating I learned to expand my craft by experimenting and pushing my imagination into real life with my creations. Although the figuring it out step and the trial runs are annoying, it pushes innovation. After the project is done it feels so fulfilling to how we as creative’s craft a idea or sketch into something solid and defined in the world.

How did you build your audience on social media?
Know your brand and your target clientele. That will help you understand how to present your work. For example, as a fashion designer a sport-wear photoshoot would not work the same for a evening wear gown. Remember, you are also an individual so put your individuality into it. Social media is just numbers, the follows don’t equal to clients.
