We recently connected with Adam Wright and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Adam thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
I have always had a strong work ethic, and a deep care and passion for whatever I put my mind to. This is no different when it comes to running my own business, Adam Wright Design. Sadly, in this industry, you can come across some very unreliable designers and developers who are sloppy and careless. This has brought many mixed feelings to the industry when it comes to hiring someone like myself, but I can always count on my dedication, reliability, quality of work, and honesty no matter what. This brings a level of work relationship that my clients care and look for, and helps extend relationships for years.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
Hey, there! I’m Adam — a California native but established Tennesseean for nearly 5 years now. As early as I can remember, I have always had a creative touch — I loved to draw and sketch, and express myself through art.
I attended Cal Poly Pomona to get my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Graphic Design. I quickly hustled to find a work post-graduation, and stumbled upon a freelance, off-site role as a designer for a high-end spa and skincare company in Beverly Hills. It was never really something that crossed my mind (to be a freelancer), but I gave it a go — and I landed my first client! I quickly came to love the flexibility, and it snowballed into finding more clients with the help of more job board searching and word of mouth.
As time went on, I grew my clientele list and began to gain more interest in website design, specifically in WordPress. Learning how to code in college really piqued my interest, and paired with my love for design, created a really great duo and transition into web.
Naturally, the digital world has only grown the past decade, and as I inherited more graphic design work, I grew my website design portfolio as well. With my now 10 years of experience in building my business, I have grown AWD to become a professional agency that clients look for.
Mostly, I work with small to medium sized businesses to help them increase their customer experience online, as well as improve their brand recognition, through both my custom website and graphic design. After clients work with me, they establish a cohesive look and feel online and in print that they’re proud to share, plus can create a foundation to continue to use and resonate with their target audience.
With my website design services, I act as both the designer AND the developer. So the result is a custom layout and design website on the WordPress platform, where it’s fully mobile responsive to capture all audiences on the go. With every project, I keep all my clients informed of the process along the way, and remain honest, transparent, and trustworthy that you’re going to receive the absolute best end product I can provide.
Between both my website and graphic design work, you will find no templates or clip art used — it’s all purely custom design that is unique to every client I serve and help. This is the only way I know, and will always follow.
As I reflect on where I have come, I am incredibly proud to have grown such a successful business based purely on my creativity and passion for my work.
When new clients come to me, I’d love for them to know that they are going to be in great hands and receive not only quality work in return, but a loyal and creative partner they can rely on.
Adam Wright Design is not just “another agency”— we’re here to become your business partner for years to come, and help change the way your brand is seen.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, the absolute most rewarding part of what I do is this simple — happy clients. When I deliver work that my clients love and appreciate, it gives me an incredible amount of fuel to just keep going!
Additionally, I find a lot of pride in seeing my work in real-life, knowing that my creativity and hard work is the sole reason for bringing this design to reality and it’s being seen by hundreds of people every day.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Back when I first landed my only freelance client, it was my ONLY client. Therefore, I really had only a little bit of work on my plate at any given time. So as new work would come in from this client, I would jump all over it and get it done within a day or so.
Well, that became a habit from the beginning that has only become a big issue as I have grown. I got so used to serving client work so quickly, that it instilled in me that I had to keep up and maintain that level of turnaround.
To this day, I’m still struggling with that lesson I learned early on — this doesn’t mean I am not responsive or provide work when promised, but simply having to teach myself to manage my own capabilities and schedule realistically. Unfortunately, there’s only so much time in the day!
