We were lucky to catch up with Adam Westerman recently and have shared our conversation below.
Adam, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
I just got back from berlin where I produced an album over the course of 3 weeks, then did shows around berlin promoting the material. it was my first string of international shows, and i got to record with artists from Syria/Lebanon/Dubai/UAE. i was flown out and housed by the lead singer of the band. I got to play shows abroad that were attended by friends from high school and summer camp, surreal experience. Carla and I met 5 years prior doing open mics in berlin, we built a friendship that became a work partnership over COVID, and she suggested we finish the work in person.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hi my name is Adam, I am a singer and record producer. Font Leroy is after the street I grew up on in Seattle – I like listening to r&b, hip-hop, jazz, soul, pop, and folk music. I draw inspiration from D’Angelo, Tom Misch, Ravyn Lenae, James Blake, James Taylor, Brandy, J Dilla, Ella Mai, Stevie Wonder, the list goes on. I am currently based in Los Angeles. I first got into studios in New York in 2018: In Brooklyn I did keys and bass for dancehall music, in the Bronx I made boom bap, in the UWS I made folk, in the LES punk pop. I have been lucky to find great collaborators in each city I have lived. Recently I have gotten the chance to work with some of my idols, which was equal parts inspiring and affirming. My latest work was writing on ‘Wouldn’t Get Far’ out 1/27. The last few months for me included going to Atlanta to teach a music production and melody ideation intensive, collaborating on trap, r&b, and lo-fi pieces around ATL, and then Berlin where I executive produced an album. Music has taken me all around the world, I am super grateful to get to do what I love and get paid for it.
My business Puget Sound Records LLC. offers production, songwriting, backing vocals, melody ideation, and mixing services. PSR also offers arrangement help for artists who have all the pieces of a song but need to present their pieces in a digestible format. I am booked by the hour and half-hour and can be reached at at [email protected]. In a live setting I am hired around LA to support vocalists on keys and bass guitar. I am most proud of my ability to put my work down and spend time with my family, whom I value far above work.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Doing a good job for the first clients, word of mouth usually leads me to my next client.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
I am grateful to get to make money from music but it is not the driving force. A good deal of the time money stops creatives from collaborating. This past year I have gotten to be on a creative team in rooms that I could not buy my way into, and if I had brought up money I would have been shown the door.
