We were lucky to catch up with Adam Tan recently and have shared our conversation below.
Adam , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I use to draw a lot as a kid. When I started high school, I got into photography. I was one of the photographers for my school news paper. I wanted to be a photojournalist. This dream faded when I started college and I discovered the theatre. I was obsessed with the theatre. I had a theatre company for a few years after college. We were called the Bad Puppets. It was a lot fun. That dream also faded and when it did my love of drawing returned and remains. So, looking back, I think I always dreamt of making a living expressing myself and sharing the way I see the world.
Adam , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a visual artist who has been inspired by Keith Haring and Kenny Scharf. I like analogue art that includes elements of intellectual property. My intellectual property is my alter ego, Roach. I am currently working with acrylic and spray paint. I supplement my art by teaching English.
We’d love to hear your thoughts on NFTs. (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
I don’t see much of a difference between fine art that spends its life in private collections and NFTs. Both have more to do with investment strategies than art. I like the idea of art being available for the people. I suppose it could be argued that if it’s not for the people, it’s not art.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is creating something that didn’t exist. Bringing an idea or a concept into the world motivates me.
