We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Adam Sliger a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Adam, thanks for joining us today. What were some of the most unexpected problems you’ve faced in your business and how did you resolve those issues?
As a music focused business person, one of the biggest problems you can face is lack of funds. When you’re on tour, things can go wrong. Vans can break down, gear can break, shows can fall through for myriad reasons. When these things happen, you have to find ways to make it work and push through.
Adam, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a musician and producer who creates music for my own artist project, for TV and film, and for artist clients. Most recently, I had music featured in an HBO MAX horror series, a TLC docu-series, and in Pawn Stars, one of my favorite shows.
I also review music gear and give production/business advice on my website http://makethatlouder.com. After over a decade in the music business, I want to create resources for people who are just starting out.
Have you ever had to pivot?
During the COVID pandemic, all of my shows and most of my artist production jobs were cancelled. I had to pivot into a new area of the music business, so I spent the lockdown creating music for TV and film, and starting Make That Louder (www.makethatlouder.com).
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
The best way I’ve found to build a reputation is to create great work on a short timeline. A lot of creatives struggle with meeting deadlines because they have to feel inspired, or because they have a hard time juggling a lot of projects. Being punctual, organized, and communicative is a great way to set yourself apart in this industry.
