Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Adam Sculnick. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Adam, appreciate you joining us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
There is an issue growing in the church in North America that people are not wanting to talk about. The lowest attendance statistic in the average church is dad’s. And if dad isn’t going to church, the family unit as a whole sees infinitely less value in the idea of church as a whole. So CIA Boys Club comes on the scene with the goal of engaging dad’s with the Gospel in a way that allows them to be both excited to receive and excited to give back. We connect the men of the community back to the local church and help them to be equipped to serve well in the local context. e give churches the tools to do that in a way that’s fun and exciting or the boys of the family and develop the materials in a way that captures dad too.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a new pastor in South Florida and when I came into faith in Christ 5 years ago, there wasn’t anything in the church for my sons to do. there was a gap that wasn’t filled and the resources out there for filling it were scarce and outdated. The church didn’t want anything to do with the materials I found, but I didn’t really like them either. So I wrote my own and the church loved it. When we held our first meeting in 2019 there were over 70 boys registered and at the close of the season in may, even with COVID being hot on the scene, we had almost 100. During the pandemic I reached out to other churches and asked that they include a pilot program version of what we now produce in their plans for reopening and 14 of them did, with a wave of success. We are now in 4 countries serving churches everywhere from the US and Canada to England and Uganda. We provide curriculum for churches to utilize, support for church leaders to grow with, and tools for parents to use at home, all with the goal of engaging boys and men with the Gospel of Jesus. Those products and service enable local churches to grow their attendance not with flashy ad campaigns or changing their Sunday service, but by connecting to the community with the Gospel in a way that the men and boys aren’t used to seeing and will be drawn to and excited about being a part of. If this is your first time hearing about CIA Boys Club and you think to yourself “Would something like this work at my church?” the thing I can say for sure im most excited about is that the answer to that question is yes. We made every part of the program customizable to any size church or homeschool group. So if you want to connect boys and dad’s to Jesus in a way that will make lasting impact for the community, this is it.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
There are 2 books that I would say radically changed the way I lead the ministry of CIA Boys Club. the first is Emotionally healthy Leadership. it helped me understand who I am as a leader and who my team is as well. And then crafts a personal rhythm for me to follow in leadership so that I serve them well as well as serving the needs of our clients well. The second book is Building a Storybrand. This one helped me figure out exactly how my work comes off to the end user and how to tell the story of our company in a way that engages people and connects with them to make them want to be a part of it.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
There is no substitute for personal relationship building. I suggest that whatever industry you are in, do two things: first figure out where your customers are (mine was to go to ministry conferences where leaders gather to grow their leadership and find new resources) and the second is go to those places as often as possible. become a presence there, make friends, build relationships. And I don’t mean make tons of sales, I mean make tons of friendships. then they will buy from you not just once but for the long term.
