We recently connected with Adam Rudman and have shared our conversation below.
Adam, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
I was raised in the projects by my single mother and stepdad. My mother is an incredibly hardworking person; I can’t recall her ever taking a sick day. When I was about 17, I remember one morning around 8 AM, still in bed, my mother came into my room and said, “You need to get up and go out. If you don’t want to go to school, that’s fine, but you need to get a job. You can’t stay in bed all day.” That same day, I found a job washing dishes and cleaning bathrooms at a local bar.
From an early age, my mother taught me the value of work and business. In middle school, she would take me to work with her on weekends. She sold jewelry, and my job was to ensure no one stole anything—a demanding 12-hour shift.
She never pressured me to study but instead nurtured my natural curiosity. She always said it was important to study things you’re genuinely interested in. Whenever something piqued my interest, she would bring me resources to help me explore and learn more about it.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My main job is to find the right balance between meeting investors’ KPIs and addressing community needs. In affordable housing in Memphis, TN, this balance is particularly challenging. The city faces a high crime rate and a risky business climate, making it easy for businesses to fail.
Over the past seven years, I’ve seen many apartment complexes shut down or get taken over by banks due to mismanagement. When this happens, the people of Memphis suffer because it means fewer available rental units. The high delinquency and eviction rates add to the risk of working in this city.
Despite these challenges, we have managed to make things work. We may not be the best, but we are committed to improving every day and striving to be better than we were yesterday.
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
First and foremost, be yourself. Authenticity is key; never try to be someone you’re not. Once you’ve embraced who you are, focus on improving the aspects of yourself that others may find less favorable.
It’s crucial to connect your team to the company’s goals. Your team members have the option to work elsewhere, so they need to appreciate the opportunity to work for you. Always remember that your success is directly tied to the quality and morale of your team.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I experienced a severe motorcycle crash that required numerous surgeries and left me unable to walk for a period. While in the hospital, just a day after my third surgery, I was already handling payroll and responding to emails. Throughout my months of recovery, I remained committed to improving and running the business. I believe that just because I was injured, it didn’t mean the world would stop and wait for me; everything continues to move forward, so it’s better to keep moving as well. Staying active and engaged in my work not only kept the business on track but also helped me recover at a remarkable speed.
