We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Adam McPhail. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Adam below.
Alright, Adam thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
When I was 13 years old, I was chosen to perform with B.B. King at the “B.B. King Coming Home to the Delta” Guitar Workshop. I was the youngest participant chosen to perform with him. For over an hour, I got the amazing opportunity to play guitar with B.B. King and listen to his wisdom; not only about music, but about life as well. B.B. King told me that even at my young age, I already played guitar like a professional and that I was destined to play guitar for a living. He encouraged both me and my family to pursue this with all of my ability.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
I first got into music as a kid wanting to be in a rock band. I began taking it very seriously after I had the endorsement from B.B. King. As a kid, I would sit in my room for 6-7 hours and practice my guitar after school. I began teaching guitar lessons and playing gigs professionally in high school. In college I studied jazz, while touring with country artists and playing at gospel churches on the weekends. These were the early years of industry exploration. Currently I am a freelance guitarist here in Nashville, TN. My career consists of performing live, teaching guitar lessons (both privately and at Belmont University and Lipscomb University), and session work. I have an extensive performance resume’, having performed with many world renowned artists, as well as an academic background in music as well. What I think makes me unique is my versatility as both a player and an educator.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
During covid, I took this downtime as an opportunity to focus on my online presence. My main focus was to build my instagram and website up as well. I built a website and began posting more content on instagram. I was able to grow my following by several thousand people, and built an entire private lesson business making more money than I ever had in my career. It was truly a blessing to have success during such a strange time, especially for people in the music and entertainment industry.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Having younger musicians look up to me and seek advice from me is the most rewarding part of my job. It is an honor to be respected by the younger generation.
