We were lucky to catch up with Adam Kalish recently and have shared our conversation below.
Adam, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Please tell us about starting your own firm and if you’d do anything different knowing what you know now.
I fell into starting my own firm. I was out of a job, and the job market was bleak. I received an interview from a small firm in Brooklyn. At the end of the interview, the attorney told me that he didn’t have a job for me, however, he could rent me some space if I wanted to start my own firm. He needed someone who practiced real estate and could take on his estate clients. I didn’t necessarily practice real estate but I also didn’t have many options for criminal law. So I decided to learn everything I could about real estate. I filed for my professional corporation and agreed to rent a desk and started my career. The phone didn’t necessarily ring for a while. I walked the streets, stepping into agents’ offices, shaking hands, and introducing myself. It took about 6 months to get consistent work but it immediately snowballed. Transactions turned into litigation and vice versa and soon I was on my way to building a top real estate firm in Brooklyn.
The best advice I can give is to build a network. Find a mentor, someone older and been through the trenches that can teach you the pitfalls and guide you through your profession. Find someone that you can both give business to and will receive business back. A symbiotic relationship where both parties benefit. Get involved with associations both in the profession and out of the profession.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I always knew I wanted to practice law. Immediatley upon leaving college, I entered into law school. My firm focuses on Real Estate work from transactions like purchase and selling properties, both residential and commercial to litigation like foreclosure, landlord tenant, partitions, condo/Coop disputes. My firm is certainly hands on with our clients, making sure to return calls, walking clients step by step through their case to the end. I am most proud to be recognized in my community as the President of the local bar association. Dedicating my time to serve the people of Brooklyn as a leader of a bar association to further causes on behalf of the lawyers and clients needs.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Colleagues. As I have grown my network and taken on more leadership positions, I have been referred more and more business. The same goes to colleagues that I have referred business to for legal issues that my firm does not handle. The more I give, the more I receive.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Keeping my word. Doing my job in a timely fashion and expressing to my client realistic expectations and meeting those expectations.
