We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Adam Emerick a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Adam, appreciate you joining us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I was in graduate school and learned about the use of Dermestid beetles to clean animals for study/display and was fascinated. I think the anatomy of animals (especially skeletal) is fascinating and seeing these skeletons can amaze and inspire people interested in science/nature. The craft is basically known to few people with many different techniques, so pulling information from others experience and developing my own techniques and styles was important. Patience and practice are probably the two most important skills to be honest. You will make a lot of mistakes and have to deal with very specific issues when you practice these skills. The only real obstacles were the aforementioned scarcity of reliable info in some cases, so just trial and error to overcome these limitations.

Adam, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My business grew out of my love for anatomy as art, and the specific draw of bones as a medium for said art. The skills I practiced in graduate school were utilized during a period of my life where I was interested in trying something risky and being a unique creator. I provide a range of eccentric products, from jewelry constructed from animal bones, pet memorial skeletons, scientific displays, and original art using various mediums in concert with animal bones. I bring a lot of clients a form of closure by transforming their loved one into artwork that they can use to remember their pets fondly. My skills are definitely unique, as most people know of the type of art/work I do but do not know where to find it. I am probably most proud of building a reputation as someone reliable and skilled for the specific services I offer. Everybody should know that I am a conservationist/naturalist at heart, and all my projects and animals involved are ethically sourced. I have the utmost respect for my clients, their wishes, and the importance of these pieces to them.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding part is the satisfaction my clients get from the services and products I provide.
: Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
To continue learning, growing my brand, teaching people about what I do, and providing the best services I can for my clients/customers.
