We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Adam Corneal. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Adam below.
Adam, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
I took a risk coming to Boston one time. I didn’t have places to stay for more than two weeks and I needed to stay for 2 months. I knew that I needed to come to Boston in order to set up my life after the pandemic and after being sick in bed for a couple of years. It was very risky because I didn’t know where I’d be in 2 weeks and without any money to support myself. But I took the risk and I went. Somehow I made it through and now I have a job as a wedding singer and I can fly back and forth between Boston, Nashville and Virginia as I please so the risk was worth it in the end

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Adam corneal. I’m originally from Trinidad and Tobago, the twin islands of the Caribbean. I began singing before I could remember. I am not a professional singing/songwriter and I also work with a wedding band called Beantown which is part of an organization called Wilson Steven’s. When I sing, whether is my own songs, or cover songs, I put my all into it. Emotionally and physically. I can feel each word as I sing it with pop ballads. With regular dance songs I express it with my feet and my entire body. I let it move however it wants to in the moment and I let the moment be the moment and it’s not choreographed. People tell me I look like I’m gliding through the air which is interesting. I also write music for sync which is music for TV and movies. I also do freelance work in writing songs for people. If a singer doesn’t feel like he can write a song, I can help him get out what he wants to say and write the song with or for them. I have a goal from all this, and that is to create a community and platform to have as much reach as possible in the world. When I am able to get that, I will have the ability to help influence others talk to people in power about things that matter like war or big decisions.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
During Covid I got really sick with stomach issues. For three years I stopped singing. I couldn’t leave the house for more than 45 minutes at a time. I eventually decided I would go back to Boston and try to get into the wedding band business because I had no money or anything because I was home for 3 years in bed. I used the last of my connections to get me audition gigs in a band called Wilson Steven’s but it meant I had to find some way to be in Boston for a few months. I was still sick though so this would be a hard journey for me. I ended up going but I only had a place to stay for a week and I had to figure out where else I’d go. After that week, I was basically homeless jumping from couch to couch for months . Eventually I got the job and moved there. Because despite me feeling sick, despite me being homeless, having no money, I still did it. My friends were there for me, and so was my band members. And I will always be grateful to that and to God for taking care of me.

Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wished I knew about LinkedIn learning earlier! It’s amazing. It’s basically a YouTube for pros only. You can look up how to do almost anything and get a certificate after you complete the course for it. I learned how to produce on there and how to mix and master. I originally wanted to do it through my college but I couldn’t because of my major. But that allowed me to learn it as if I was in college.
