We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Adam Chambers. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Adam below.
Adam , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Maintaining a life as an artist is a life of constantly taking a risk. It is not for everyone, but that is what makes it special. So much goes into the mental side of choosing this profession but some people don’t realize that you will always continue to have to choose it. So you are constantly taking a risk. I find that many people that are starting out are stuck on something. Bad relationship, past traumas, financial insecurity, lacking confidence, and the list goes on and on. But that is what people are leading with. And right behind that layer is the best thing about them, and what they are so good at, and what they really want. Ask yourself how would you best friend describe you ? It’s usually in those answers that the best thing about you is revealed. Start to lead with that. The risks won’t seem so scary and you will approach them all with a real sense of confidence..
Adam , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I moved to LA at 18 and attended The American Academy of Dramatic Arts. After I graduated I got an agent right out of school and booked a commercial that put me in SAG/AfTRA right away. I realize that this doesn’t;t happen to everyone right away but it gave me a jumping off point out of school. I started booking right away and in the first few years I had done Guest Stars and Co Stars on net work TV. But I also realized I wasn’t acting as much as I wanted to. I had stories I wanted to tell. I had people I wanted to work with and people I wanted to help. So I started my own theatre company called LOFT Ensemble with a group of like minded people and 18 years later , 4 locations, later, almost 100 productions later, we are still here. Bigger and better than ever. Im very proud of the work we have done. I’m the Artistic Director but there have been and are currently so many other people that help to make our company run and become what it has. Im also a teacher of acting at USC, The American Academy of Dramatic Arts, and Orange County School of the Arts. I love coaching actors and finding new ways to inspire them to be the best version of themselves. I have my own private coaching business for actors where we can work on auditors, mind set, demo reels, business techniques, and self discovery.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Helping others. Maybe they need to disconnect from life and we step in. Maybe they need to be reminded of life and we step in. A simple joke or a complex story can really help someone and we may not even know our reach. But also we inspire others coming behind us. The more success you have as an artist you have a responsibility to help tell some secrets to others that what to do what you want to do.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Show up. Be excited to be moved, entertained, changed, made to think. We have to get back to the place where entertainment is actually entertaining. But that is on all of us and how we show up. if you show up jaded and jealous then you watch and support that way. Instead of getting jealous get inspired.
