Adaeze Nwanonyiri and, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
Bea’s Bakery is a multicultural bakery that strives to ensure that every culture and nationality has a seat at the table. The establishment has been historically known as a Jewish bakery. As a first generation Nigerian, I know what it feels like to be excluded so I wanted to ensure that inclusion was a must. Designing the interior of the bakery with different colors that get all of the customers excited and hungry psychologically was a key factor. Additionally, specific multicultural ingredients in our baked goods is another important factor. For example, our red velvet kola nut cupcake is a Nigerian inspired dish which also pays homeage to Juneteenth. This positively popular desert has kola nut ground into the cupcake mix. Kola nut is a West African fruit which symbolizes humility, good faith and offering as a sacrifice. This fruit is a cultural symbol in Nigeria within the Igbo tribe and is a mandatory staple during special occasions. The kola nut is presented during the “Knocking Of The Door” ceremony when the male is asking for the daughter’s hand in marriage.
Red Velvet is a national and tasty classic, but it is heavily honored on June 19th (Juneteenth) to celebrate the emancipation of the slaves in Texas in 1865. The red color symbolized the sacrifice and the resilience.
Baking the goods to the right temperature and ensuring that the texture is perfect to share with all of our customers.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Lenny Rosenberg was born and raised in Plainview, Long Island. Since the tender age of seven he was immersed in the family business of bakeries, delis, pizzerias, catering and restaurants from the East to the West Coast. His father, Robert Rosenberg, was a seasoned pro at rebranding bakery establishments for over 50 years including the landmark Eclairs in New York City. Staring at the age of seven-years-old Lenny worked steadily in the family businesses until eventually the torch was passed to him. He bought and rebranded his first bakery at the age of 17.
Success quickly ensued and Lenny continued to purchase and rebrand multiple bakeries & eateries. In 2000 he searched for a new challenge by moving out west where he continued to rebrand great locations one after another. It was in LA where Lenny met interior designer Adaeze Nwanonyiri. The duo decided that every location Lenny would buy and rebrand Adaeze would put her designing skills to work in every location. Lenny has branded such notable California bakeries & eateries such as Nosh of Beverly Hills, 17th Street Cafe & Marmalade Café on Montana Ave, Junior’s bakery deli in Westwood and the beloved Bea’s Bakery in Los Angeles.
Any thoughts, advice, or strategies you can share for fostering brand loyalty?
