We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Adaeze Anane. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Adaeze below.
Adaeze, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about how you’ve thought about whether to sign with an agent or manager?
I started acting, music lessons, by Seattle Public Schools. I was in my schools leading role play, “Hansel & Gretel” as Gretel. I was taught how to memorize lines and scripts by my teacher, Mrs. Anderson, at my Middle School; Aki Kurose, in 6th Grade. I took piano classes during my middle school years at my Community Center, Rainier Beach Community Center
I grew up practicing my craft of the arts including the study of poetry, Edgar Allen Poe, Shakespeare, Reading and Studying Books at a higher level than my school year, gaining an efficiency in Reading and English to understand how to pronounce words when acting.
By the time I reached being a young adult I found an Agency in Seattle by the name of Seattle Artist Agency, where I applied to Audition. I went into their agency and did a script audition monologue they provided; about Pepsi and Hersheys.
They told everyone in a group that they would only call the people that they chose the next day after recording the audition. The next day I receive a call, it was the owner of Seattle Artist Agency asking for me to come in to the Talent Agency Office, where I signed a Contract with my Mother.
Later on in my career I have been with Big Fish Northwest, and now I get Non Exclusive Contracts allowing more freedom for me to sign with more than one agency.
I am now signed with Agents at Quickbook Agency, Manikin Talent Agency
As well as casting companies such as Nine9 Talent Agency,.
I’m also signed as a singer and musical artist with Bentley Records.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
What started me in this industry was creating my own YouTube Brand channel “Gloomy Moon Child” aka “GMChannel Show” aka “The Gloomy Moon Child Channel,” as well as doing Cosplay at Emerald City Comic Con.
I filmed my own traveling video blog with my mother and sister; Pat Valdez, and Layla Anane. Our film was called “iAda Travels; Portland Oregon Getaway.” I used Amazons platform and I produced our show on Amazon Distribution.
Through my YouTube and my YouTube Network I applied to Fullscreen Media where I signed with their network under my YouTube Name; “Gloomy Moon Child.”
Then I produced my own music through Fullscreen Medias platform Loudr. Where I first was known under my musical artist name “Dia Decayo.”
Now I’m more with mainstream Talent Agencies than when I was with Agencies like Fullscreen Media.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
During my career I almost quit, after being let go by a Talent agency for my health reasons. My sister Layla Anane supported me while I was crying in my room and she told me to not give up. After that I worked very hard by studying my acting books that had monologues for my age and gender, and I recited them almost everyday, as well as learning accents through YouTube self help videos online. I also learned how to create costume cosplays through YouTube self help videos as well. So YouTube is a very helpful tool as a creator, as well as Public Libraries if you can’t afford to buy new books, and bookstores like Barnes and Nobles.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
There should be more programs Charity Programs for Actors that are going through financial need. As well as programs for Actors to have Mentors that are Actors as well or Talent Agent Mentorship for Aspiring Actors.
