Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ada Bautista. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Ada, appreciate you joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
As a teacher, designer, and jewelry maker, my passion lies in sharing the transformative power of creating something from nothing. When I chose fashion design, I discovered a language that allowed me to express myself deeply and connect with others. I wanted young women to feel empowered and heard through my designs, respecting their unique bodies and perspectives. As I expanded my practice to include jewelry, I realized the profound connection between humans and nature. Incorporating elements like quartz into my designs serves as a reminder of the earth’s energy and our ability to harness it.

Ada, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Ada, and I’m the creator behind DISBAU. I’ve always been drawn to projects with a purpose, and my brand is no exception. When I decided to pursue fashion design, I envisioned creating pieces that would empower and inspire women. I started by designing accessories and clothing for teenage girls, as I believe that this is a crucial time for young women to feel accepted, loved, and special. DISBAU has since evolved to cater to a wider range of young women.
In 2018, I made DISBAU my full-time job. In 2020, I participated in a regional fashion competition and placed second, which led to an opportunity to showcase my work at one of Latin America’s most prestigious fashion fairs.
Currently, I’m designing a collection of eight outfits inspired by the theme of migration named ¨El vuelo terrestre¨.
Living on the world’s busiest border, San Diego-Tijuana, has greatly influenced my work. I’ll be participating in the World Design Capital event in October, showcasing my collection where I consciously use materials and reuse some textiles, creating pieces that are both stylish and sustainable like cotton, linen, and recycled fabrics. This collection is dedicated to modern women who embrace their past while building a strong and authentic future.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
In the midst of the pandemic, I experienced a sudden shift in perspective. I questioned the significance of my work and wondered if people were more focused on their individual and spiritual growth. I feared that all the effort I had put into DISBAU over the years had been in vain. However, witnessing the creation of DISBAU from the depths of my being proved me wrong. When you believe in something and create it to serve and help others, you never truly lose.
While museums, boutiques, and studios where I sold my pieces were forced to close, I was surprised to see that people continued to reach out to me through my social media. Many came to pick up their orders directly from my workshop, and I shipped to others. It was incredibly heartwarming to see that the community still sought me out

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
The main thing would be to support our social media and encourage people to ask questions about the artists in their community. Who resonates with them? What message do they want to convey when choosing what to wear? Do they know who made it? I believe the best way to be conscious about what we buy is to investigate where it comes from, who made it, and if their message is consistent
