We recently connected with Acute Inflections and have shared our conversation below.
Acute Inflections, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
Yes. We’ve worked extremely hard over the past ten years to earn all of our income from our music.
For most of the ten years, our income came from performing for corporate events, weddings, charity events, fundraisers, and other events. We’re extremely grateful for those performances because they allowed us to expand our repertoire and experiment with our outfits until we found what worked best for us.
In the beginning, most of the gigs were low-paying ones at restaurants and hotels, but those quickly led to more lucrative private events across the country and internationally. The income we earned from those events eventually allowed us to improve our marketing, purchase better equipment, record and release several albums and singles, build our team, and produce our own shows. We’ve also started partnering with travel companies to perform in Sicily and South Africa and to bring our fans with us.
Our biggest milestone happened last year when we went on our first self-funded tour of the East Coast, and every show sold out. Since then, we’ve been hosting more concerts, and they’ve quickly grown to be more profitable than our events.
While this all took a long time to come together, I don’t believe we could have sped it up. Our experiences in private events made us better musicians and business owners.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
We are a double bass and vocals duo from New York called Acute Inflections. Our music is based on jazz but explores many other genres, including R&B, Pop, Reggae, and Rock.
We got into the business when the other musicians didn’t show up for a gig, and we were forced to perform as a bass and voice duo. The audience loved it, and we haven’t turned back since.
Our private event clients love what we do because we perform a fun mix of jazz classics and jazzy renditions of well-known songs from other genres. We also love customizing our attire to complement each event’s theme.
In addition to our music and outfits, our fans love our concerts because of our humorous couple’s banter and ability to engage with the audience.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Our mission is to follow in the footsteps of artists like Bob Marley, Fela Kuti, and Billie Holiday, who used their music to spread messages of love, unity, and freedom, improve the world, and shine light on current issues where we can all improve. We also want to inspire people to pursue their dreams and constantly evolve.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding part for us is hearing stories from fans on how our music has positively impacted them. We’ve heard from couples how our music and performances have helped them through difficult times in their relationships. We’ve also heard numerous stories during and after the pandemic of people who recently lost a loved one, and our music helped them through the grieving process. Lastly, people often come to our shows to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, and other notable life events. It’s always nice to hear them say they had one of the best nights of their life with us.
