We caught up with the brilliant and insightful AC Trigger a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
AC Trigger, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
Honestly, all my music has deep meaning behind it. Every punchline, word, all the way down to each syllable is specifically placed where it is for a reason. But the most meaningful would definitely be Running Low. I struggled with a lot of depression and anxiety from middle school all the way up till that song came out. I kept it to myself because I didn’t want to be looked at as THAT kid, but looking back I should have, because man, I was in a real dark place, suicidal, felt alone, all that. But I got through it, all by myself too, and that made me unstoppable, because If I can be at literal rock bottom and come back from it? Yeah nothing else in this world can slow me down. This song was my way of letting all that out, unbottling the thoughts that I had kept to myself for so long, and because of that song, because all those feelings were released, I could start to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
AC Trigger, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Austin Campbell, better known as AC Trigger, and I’m a rapper, producer, and entrepreneur out of Kansas City, MO. I don’t generally label my music, but if I had to I’d say I make a mix of emo-rap, R&B, and midwest hiphop. Today everyone wants to say they’re a rapper, the difference between me and the noise is that while they’re uploading music to Soundcloud about a life they don’t live, I’m out here hustling, networking, outworking everyone else to make a name for myself. When my single Running Low dropped in 2020, between Spotify, Apple Music and the other platforms it was streamed in 89 countries around the world that year alone, definitely something I’m proud of.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
That is a good one. The most rewarding part about making music is when I get DM’s from fans telling me about their struggles and letting me know that my music helped them get through it. The fact that something I went through and expressed can change lives of those around the world is just surreal to me, but very rewarding.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I actually had a marketing manager for the longest time that helped my build my online audience, his name was Ned and he was a really cool guy. He taught me how important marketing is in the music industry, especially on social media, how to network in the industry, and that you can be the best whatever in your field but if nobody sees that, sadly you won’t get anywhere. If a marketing firm isn’t in the budget, learn the art of selling yourself. Whether it be your music, your business or just you, convincing others to give you a shot in life is an excellent skill to develop.
