We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Aby Rao. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Aby below.
Aby, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
As an independent filmmaker, my passion has always gravitated toward crafting narratives that illuminate the extraordinary lives of immigrants and refugees. In my maiden venture, I delved into the poignant tale of a middle-aged Tibetan refugee crossing paths with a Dominican-American truck driver. This filmmaking odyssey profoundly shaped my artistic sensibilities, molding my style, tone, and narrative predilections. In the wake of this transformative experience, I made a steadfast commitment to chronicle the diverse and nuanced experiences of refugees and immigrants.
In the realm of filmmaking, one’s canvas is limited; there are only so many stories one can tell in a lifetime. Contemplating this inherent constraint, an exhilarating idea began to take shape – what if there existed a platform where a myriad of rich, untold stories could find their voice? This musings birthed the vision for the Home Is Distant Shores Film Festival.
Five years ago, fueled by boundless enthusiasm, I, alongside two kindred spirits, embarked on a mission to bring this vision to life. Our shared dedication to shedding light on the kaleidoscope of immigrant experiences became the driving force behind this endeavor. The festival, at its core, stands as a vibrant celebration of the lives and journeys of immigrants hailing from every corner of the globe.
The Home Is Distant Shores Film Festival emerged as a testament to the collective fervor for narratives that transcend borders and cultures. Through this cinematic extravaganza, we invite audiences into a world where tales of resilience, courage, and tenacity unfold on the silver screen. Each frame pulsates with the energy of countless journeys, capturing the essence of what it truly means to belong, even in the face of geographic and societal distances.
In the heart of this festival lies the spirit of inclusivity, where stories from diverse backgrounds converge, fostering a sense of unity in our shared human experiences. As we stand on the precipice of our upcoming festival, I am invigorated by the prospect of immersing our audience in a tapestry of narratives that resonate, inspire, and ignite the imagination. Home Is Distant Shores Film Festival isn’t merely an event; it is a vibrant tapestry woven from the threads of myriad immigrant experiences, inviting everyone to embark on a cinematic journey that transcends boundaries and captures the boundless energy of the human spirit.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I hail from the bustling city of Mumbai, where I was nurtured in the embrace of a middle-class family. My formative years were steeped in the magic of Bollywood and Hollywood blockbusters like “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids” and “Jaws.” The allure of storytelling, embodied in the grandeur of theater and the art of acting, always fascinated me. In my youth, I dabbled in acting and dancing, yet it was in the realms of direction and production that I discovered my true strengths.
The orchestration of a film festival mirrors the intricate dance of a feature film project. It demands a delicate balance of creativity and analytical acumen. Ultimately, the essence lies in both entertaining and enriching our audience. Witnessing the evolution of our festival, observing its burgeoning audience and the ever-increasing quality of film submissions, fills me with immense pride.
As we gear up for the grand spectacle of our festival in spring 2024, we are ceaselessly exploring innovative avenues to provide an unparalleled experience for our audience and filmmakers alike. We are on the cusp of unveiling a treasure trove of unique and imaginative ideas that promise to redefine the very fabric of cinematic events. Stay tuned, for the unveiling of our creative endeavors is imminent, and we are brimming with excitement to share our vision with the world.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
The Home Is Distant Shores Film Festival is driven by a multitude of goals, each pulsating with fervor and purpose. Firstly, our commitment remains unwavering: to curate and showcase films of the highest caliber, shedding light on the myriad lives and experiences of immigrants and refugees spanning diverse circumstances and backgrounds. Through these cinematic narratives, we aim to paint a vivid and authentic portrait of the immigrant and refugee experience, capturing their trials, triumphs, and untold stories.
Secondly, we stand as torchbearers, urging immigrants and refugees to step forward and share their narratives firsthand. In their voices, we discover the unvarnished truth, providing an unfiltered lens into the lives of those who leave their homes for a myriad of reasons. This raw honesty is the heartbeat of our festival, shaping a platform where genuine stories find their rightful place.
Beyond the realm of films, our festival yearns to embrace a tapestry of storytelling forms. The core theme being storytelling, we extend our arms to welcome poets, dancers, musicians, and creators of interactive media. Each art form, a thread in the rich fabric of storytelling, weaves together a tapestry of emotions, bringing the audience into a realm where words, movements, and sounds converge to create an immersive experience.
Lastly, our vision transcends the confines of a mere event. We aspire to interlace our work deeply within local communities, reaching far beyond central North Carolina. We envision a harmonious blend, where citizens and immigrants come together, forging bonds that echo with resilience and support. It’s not just about films; it’s about building a robust and empathetic community, where every soul, regardless of origin, finds a place to belong. Together, we weave a tapestry of strength, understanding, and unity, fostering a community that stands unwaveringly by each other’s side. This, above all else, is the heartbeat of the Home Is Distant Shores Film Festival.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Supporting a local film festival dedicated to telling stories about immigrants and refugees requires a collective and multifaceted approach from society. Here are several ways society can contribute to the success of such a festival:
– Engage and Attend: Actively participate by attending the film festival. Engage with the stories being told, listen to the voices of immigrants and refugees, and appreciate their experiences. Your presence not only supports the festival financially but also creates a vibrant and diverse audience.

– Volunteer: Offer your time and skills as a volunteer. We require a lot of behind-the-scenes work, from organizing events to assisting attendees. Volunteering your time can significantly alleviate the workload and contribute to the smooth functioning of the festival.
– Financial Support: Contribute financially to the festival through donations or sponsorships. Financial support helps cover various costs, such as venue rentals, promotional materials, and filmmaker accommodations. Local businesses and individuals can sponsor specific films or events, gaining visibility while supporting a noble cause.
– Collaborate: Encourage local businesses, schools, and community organizations to collaborate with the festival. Partnerships can lead to diverse events, workshops, or panel discussions that enhance the overall festival experience.
– Advocacy: Advocate for the festival’s importance in local media, educational institutions, and community forums. Highlight the festival’s role in fostering empathy, understanding, and cultural exchange, thereby promoting a more inclusive society.
– Feedback and Dialogue: Provide constructive feedback to the festival organizers. Your insights can help them improve the event in subsequent years. Engage in dialogues about the films and their themes, fostering discussions that promote understanding and tolerance.
– Cultural Exchange: Encourage cultural exchange between the local community and immigrant or refugee communities. Workshops, food festivals, or art exhibitions can be organized alongside the film screenings, creating opportunities for meaningful interactions.
– Support Filmmakers: Support immigrant and refugee filmmakers not only during the festival but also throughout the year. Attend screenings of their other works, promote their films, and help create platforms for their voices to be heard.
– Long-term Commitment: Recognize that supporting a local film festival is not a one-time event but an ongoing commitment. Engage with issues related to immigrants and refugees beyond the festival period, fostering a sustained culture of inclusivity and acceptance.
By embracing these strategies, society can actively contribute to the success of a local film festival dedicated to sharing the powerful narratives of immigrants and refugees, fostering an environment of mutual respect, understanding, and cultural appreciation.
