We caught up with the brilliant and insightful ABRY a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
ABRY, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I can remember as early as the age of four being so captivated by Hilary Duff and the Cheetah Girls. They were the first “pop stars” that I fell in love with, along with Hannah Montana/ Miley Cyrus. After getting to see all of these artists perform at the rodeo, everything began to crystalize for me. I just knew music from then on music was going to play a huge part in my life. Skip forward to high school, I began taking my musical aspirations more seriously, doing everything I could to shape my sound, boost my confidence, and get in front of audiences. I achieved this with the combination of singing in the school choir, the youth band at my church, and singing back up for a band called “Dark Spark Rays” in local bars and small venues. Being in a band as a 17-year-old with a bunch of adults made me feel like I was a real musician, it was a really fun and great introduction to the Houston music scene. As soon as I graduated high school though I knew I wanted to go solo. This was the only way I felt I would be able to fully express all of my creative ideas, thus becoming ABRY in 2017.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is ABRY, I’m a pop artist and proud native of Houston, Texas. While my foundation is rooted in pop, I love to venture into uncharted territory, constantly exploring diverse sounds and styles to keep things captivating. Nothing is more gratifying than coasting through ideas with my producer that eventually evolve into something more powerful than initially envisioned. To me, genuine self-expression is a cornerstone in making any kind of art, but especially music. My upcoming debut album, “Outlet,” is a culmination of relentless effort and dedication to finding myself over the years. It will showcase a new sonic direction, and I can’t wait for people to experience it!
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
I believe that supporting artists and nurturing a vibrant creative community is best achieved by recognizing the value of the arts and making investments accordingly. This means providing adequate funding and resources for arts education in schools and community programs. It also involves supporting local venues and festivals that showcase emerging artists. Society should acknowledge and appreciate the contributions of artists to our world, and ensure they are fairly compensated for their work. As an aspiring artist, I understand the challenges of breaking into the industry and gaining exposure. Any support and encouragement from fans, followers, and industry professionals can have a significant impact. Ultimately, the goal is to cultivate a culture that cherishes creativity, diversity, and self-expression and provides artists with the necessary platform and resources to flourish.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My creative journey is fueled by a deep desire to connect with people through my music and to hopefully create a lasting impact. I believe that songs have the power to inspire, heal, and bring people together, and my goal is to use my platform to make a positive difference in the world. At the same time, I am also driven by a desire to constantly challenge myself and push the boundaries of what is possible within the pop genre. I want to create music that is both innovative and accessible, and that speaks to a diverse range of listeners.
