We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Abria Davis a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Abria thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
The first time I knew I wanted to pursue makeup – It was def longer than I can recall. I was a kid. Being feminine and beautiful was literally instilled in me as a child. I watched my mother get dressed daily for work and it was her style along that inspired me. She’s really the true inspiration and reason behind me being so artistic today. Her style and grace impacted my life. She still is the epitome of a poised powerful but yet feminine woman. I truly wanted to be her. She’s my biggest supporter and I don’t think I would of ever made it this far without her being the woman that she is. It made me who I am.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
A brief introduction about me….
My name is A’bria formally known as Bree and the notorious makeup artist serving metro Atlanta. My Brand/Company is called eyeconmakeup. I know most are probably wondering how did I get into makeup. My honest answer is I was chosen. I don’t think I had a choice not to be apart of the beauty industry. It’s something that was instilled in me as a young kid. Between my mother and grandmother they were the epitome of beauty. I always knew I would have my hands in the beauty industry. I started off giving massages and pedicures at 12/13 years old. I made money off it too. Believe it or not. I was mobile and I didn’t even drive if that makes sense. LOL! My mother would take me around to my family house and I would provide the service. See, entrepreneur already. Literally embedded in my blood. Years later it’s not by surprised I’m a makeup artist. I’m just like every other girl you see. I enjoy going out with my friends whether that includes lunch dates, social gatherings amongst other creatives, or just lounging around. I wanted to provide a service where clients can come and relax and be themselves. I wanted to build a community/ a safe haven for women that are just like me but walk different paths in life. I’m glad I took the risk.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the confident boost clients have when they first take a look at themselves. Not a dollar in this world is more rewarding than that. It’s the feels that all women should experience. I know not only my job is done but my purpose is being served.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Major lesson I had to unlearn about being an artist is…..
you are not everyone’s cup of tea. you can’t please everybody you connect with. But the best thing you can do is only be you.
short story I remember being told along time ago before the soft glam era. That’s the category I would rate my makeup. I’ve been doing soft glam for years but it seems to now have found it’s spot in this industry. I was told that my makeup was too natural. This was def during the times the heavy dramatic makeup was trending. Though there’s a place for makeup like that and will always be. I felt discouraged by the comment for a while, I wondered. What about the girls who just want to be simple and soft? At that moment, a light bulb clicked on. I realized that I wasn’t like anyone else. I was myself and that’s what made me stood out. I simply resulted to these words “everyone does not have to like you, as long as they respect your craft”. Whether they patronize or not, I’ve found my tribe of ladies. And believe me, I am truly grateful for them.
