We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Abraham Morales. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Abraham below.
Abraham, appreciate you joining us today. One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
Fixing things is underrated. These days, most things are not made to last or be fixed. Consumerism fueled by big brands has trained most of us to expect the next best thing and be ready to discard our items at the first inconvenience. At Jam, we do things differently. We believe in the power of repairs. Whether it’s because of the sentimental value of your first guitar or because you set out the goal of putting together a franken-strat, we love taking a beat up, dusty guitar and returning it clean, healthy and sounding as great as you’d hoped. There are many talented guitar techs and luthiers in the industry who also dedicate their time to fixing what’s broken and maintaining what isn’t, while we take inspiration on many incredible techs such as Dan Erlewine and Gerry Hayes, at Jam we are constantly finding solutions to unprecedented problems. Often times, clients bring in their guitars because they have nowhere else to go, thinking there is no solution, it’s our please to attempt extending the life of any instrument. By doing so, we are able to give musicians, bassists, guitarists the tone and sound they’re looking for in their instrument.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Jam is a guitar tech and musical instrument and accessory store. We work with musicians from all walks of life to revive and maintain their instruments. We provide repairs services, modifications, custom wiring jobs, fret works such as leveling and refretting, etc. This small business started in 2013 at home, working on my own guitars and bass and then on my friends’ guitars and basses. Slowly but surely Jam became more formal, with loyal clients and friends of the shop witnessing our growth. In june 2020 I was faced with the decision of either quitting altogether or investing my life’s savings in this project. Luckily, I took the risk and two years later we have a well equipped shop and have received over 3,000 instruments in our time here.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
One of the most important things for us has been simply being honest with our clientele. There have been many so-called techs who scam people to get a quick penny. We believe quality work is always the better option. Being honest with the musicians who come into the shop allows the business relationship to flow smoothly and to make sure the work that the guitar needs is what gets done. This policy has led us to have made a name for ourselves in the industry as a tried and true quality service.
Any thoughts, advice, or strategies you can share for fostering brand loyalty?
We love our regulars! Fortunately, we have been blessed with lots of business through these hard times. We always treat each guitar as if it were our own, with care and professionalism. We’ve had high profile clients come into the shop and they continue to come back for regular services because they know the shop is always a safe space for them. This last part is key to Jam’s success as a small business. We strive to make sure that every person who comes into our shop is welcome and safe. I think everyone will always go back to where they feel at home, so that’s why our clients keep coming back. This is their instruments’ second home.
