We were lucky to catch up with Abraham Khan recently and have shared our conversation below.
Abraham, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
The majority of my musical knowledge was self taught. I learned a lot of the fundamentals playing in my school’s orchestra as a kid, but I feel like I had to relearn a lot of it as an adult because I didn’t take it as seriously as I should have. Looking back, I really wish I had taken some guitar or piano lessons, or anything that taught music through more of a rock or jazz lense, because I know that would have been much more engaging for a kid than your standard, western, European classical music. I think I also got in my own way a bit, trying to learn and do everything myself, because once I started going out and performing live with other bands, I instantly became a better player.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Attic Space is a sort of all-encompassing, and ever-changing, music and art project. The idea behind it was a band that is constantly changing, and evolves through different “seasons,” each with its own genre, aesthetic, art style, visuals, and members/collaborators, sort of like an anthology TV show. Basically, you can expect every Attic Space release to be extremely different. Currently Season One, which included the debut album and an EP done in collaboration with the Austin-based artist, Vivid Fever Dreams, is coming to a close, and Season Two is around the corner.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I have such a deep love for music, and at the end of the day, I just want to make as much of it as possible, and share it with as many people as I can. I haven’t talked much about this yet, but I also have a love for story telling, so I hope to slowly, across multiple releases, unveil a vast and vivid, unified story that people can connect with.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
At least on a local level, the best thing is to just go out and support your friends! Go see local bands, commission local artists, hire local designers!
