We were lucky to catch up with Above My Enemy recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Above My Enemy , thanks for joining us today. Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
The short answer is no. We all work regular jobs full time, and we all make a living doing something else besides music. But if we could play music full time as a career, that would be the ultimate goal. It would benefit everyone around us and we could use our platform to help all the people who helped us get to where we are today.
Knowing what we know now, we wish we would’ve chosen better musicians with the same mindset instead of relying on our friends from the very beginning. Chemistry is everything, and you have to find the right group to push each other to better musicians and better people.

Above My Enemy , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
The band itself started in 2012 by guitarist/vocalist Carlos Hernandez. It took multiple member changes before he met drummer Drew Valerio. The two began writing new material and then eventually met bass player Marc Hernandez. They played shows together as a 3 piece for over a year before bringing in the final piece, lead guitarist Andrew Gonzalez.
What sets the band apart is how we look. There is an age difference and completely different musical styles, but it’s the chemistry between us that helps us keep going. We hold each other accountable, we hold each other to a higher standard, and we support each other in our personal lives. The band gives us an outlet, and when we get together we set our egos aside so we can truly put everything into the music.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
The love of the music and the ability to have the gift to create music that people enjoy goes a long way. But not everyone is always on the same page. It took years of failure before finally finding the right pieces to the puzzle. Everyone has to be on the same page and share the same ideas and goals, and finding those right people is rare. This project is now going in the direction it was always intended to be, but it definitely took the early struggles to help appreciate everything that’s here today.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Playing live shows is an undescribable feeling, but doing it together with your brothers takes it to another level. It helps us all escape from real life, and it puts us in a zone to where the most important thing is entertaining our fans and putting on an unforgettable show. It’s all one step closer to hopefully being able to financially support our loved ones by doing what we love.
