We recently connected with Abioduni Martin and have shared our conversation below.
Abioduni, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s something you believe that most people in your industry (or in general) disagree with?
As an owner of a sign and wrap company and having 10 years of experience in the signage industry. In my encounters with peers, we disagree on having a universal price sheet for the services and products we sell to the consumer. I’m sure this happens in most industries; however, it seems that the signage and wrap industry don’t really have a grasp on what a product or service should cost. Our industry in regard to price is part science and part art. There are a lot of complexities when it comes to pricing a sign vs a car wrap, the amount of product it takes to complete a task, and the difficulties to install on a variety of substrates. Here’s an example: installing vinyl materials on concrete is very different from installing vinyl on a much smoother surface like a flat wall. There are different types of materials needed for both, and concrete is much more difficult to install and requires extra steps and a greater level of skill sets to complete such a task. This also would determine what one would charge for such a job. We as sign shop owners must ask the consumer lots of questions and do our part to make sure we get everything we need to price the consumer per the job and the skills it would take to complete the task. There is no one size fits all, in this case just because you were charged one price in the United State of America doesn’t mean you will get the same price in China for the same service or product.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Abioduni Martin my parents are from Nigeria I was raised in San Francisco California; I now reside in Atlanta Georgia where my sign company dew.com.co is located. I am a Graduate of Grambling State University class of 2005. I have a BS in computer information systems. I enjoy traveling the world, reading and spending time with my lovely lady Tressy and my family.
I was lucky, to get into the signage industry. The signage industry is not the typical industry you want to be a part of, when people asked you when you were a kid; what do you want to be when you grow up? A sign guy didn’t come to mind. Most people I’ve encountered in this industry come from legacy, they are 2nd and 3rd generation sign and wrap shop owners. you have two options in getting into this industry you become a legacy, or you are introduced into it. I was introduced 10 years ago, and it changed my life for the better. My company DEW does everything from design, print, and installation. We install channel, letters, and fleet graphics on vehicles and commercial tents on storefronts. The most interesting part of my business and the joy I get out of working in this field is the clients. I solve so many of their problems when it comes to marketing their projects from a physical standpoint. At DEW we are able to assure the consumer that they are in good hands, and we will do everything for them to make the process as seamless as possible. I believe what sets DEW apart from my competitors is we are transparent about the process and how we charge the consumer, we are educators, and we provide top-notch service.
The thing that I am most proud of is how much I’ve grown in the signage industry; 10 years is a long time I’ve made some mistakes and I learned from them. I’ve been through the hardships, and I grew from them. I continue to challenge my crew and steer the company’s vision forward. Our mission is to educate the consumer on all things about the signage industry, so they are better informed about products and services, to make better choices.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
What helped me build my reputation within my market is how attentive we are to the needs of the consumer. We enjoy bringing the vision of our customers to life. From design, print, and installation we pride ourselves on the details. Getting it right the first time is what separates us from being just average we strive to be perfect in every way. The meaning of my company name DEW says it all, “Do Everything Wonderfully.”
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The old-school methods are still golden for my company when it comes to getting leads. Here are some examples:
1. Cold calling, my sales rep and I send between 100-200 calls a day pending on how busy our day is.
2. Cold emailing, we mass send these out or individually send customize your emails to make them more personable. I like to use a reasonably priced cold email app called instantly here is the link: https://instantly.ai/
you will need to create a couple of marketing emails that align with your company email but are not directly connected to your website tech for instructions or you can reach out to me I will show you how to do it.
3. Networking events, we attend networking events 2 times a month if the business is a little slow. This really helps with growing your business.
4. Word of mouth is last, but it has been my best number 1 source of gaining clients, doing great work and asking your clients to refer you to customers is a gold mine
