We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Abigail Yeung. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Abigail below.
Abigail , appreciate you joining us today. I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
I am simply happy doing what I do. Sometimes, I question whether I should be doing something else that may be able to contribute to the world. I still would like to do and I plan to do something worthwhile unrelated to the arts and film, such as contribute to environmental protection or healthcare for all. But right in this moment, I need to figure out what to do with my life before I can make myself fully resourceful.
I have always known that I was stronger when it comes to the arts. It was always film and music that drove me to where I am today, and with the support of my parents, I am so glad that this is what I am going to be doing for quite a while, if not, the rest of my life. Sure, I have my doubts sometimes about myself and my abilities doing what I do. I worry about the future and what fate has in store for me. I always fear that I should be doing something else with my life. Maybe I need a safety net. But nevertheless, I will never regret challenging myself to step into the world of art and film and exploring the many things and experiences that being an artist and filmmaker has to offer.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Abigail Yeung, most call me Abi! I took a leap of faith after high school with little experience in film, and I just went for it. At 17, I moved to New York City to make films and experience everything. I’ve always been the creative type, whether it came to film, writing or music (and maybe more!). Other than writing and directing, I often produce or cast for films, and I love doing it because it takes a lot of focus and passion to be compelled to a story and it’s often a lot of talking to people and solving problems. One highlight about what I do when it comes to film and writing is that it’s always fun yet always meaningful. To me, there’s always a main message that I want and need to have that lets me focus on what I want to get on paper and on the screen. When you start to work on projects such as writing scripts, I learn more about myself and about others because we communicate our thoughts and life and make into stories, so it’s just basically free therapy!

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Meeting people along the way is one of the best experiences to have when you are in the creative industry. Everyone’s thoughts and ideas have the ability to illuminate your vision in life. You never know what will happen because of who you talk to and where that can lead. Networking with people outside of the creative industry is just as beneficial, as you can get away from the creative world and possibly refresh your way of seeing things or thinking a certain way, or maybe just getting comments from a whole other perspective. I have met people that I never thought I would ever get the chance to talk to, but I did and it happened because I just so happen to be at an event with a wide array of strangers! Either way, it builds up courage and lets you be more comfortable around people you’ve never met which is essential in getting your stories and ideas out in the world. You gotta learn to pitch!

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
As creatives with the power to influence many through art, a strong, meaningful message can always be a good way to start thinking about what you want to spread to the world. The sincerity about your passions and beliefs will mean a lot when you start to create something that is important to you. You may not need a purpose to create art, but having purpose to drive you to do it is what can make all the difference. To me, film and music and writing is a powerful source to change or open your eyes to new avenues of thinking and seeing the world in a new light. It changes and inspires people to do new things, see each other clearly, understand life and its strangeness, uniqueness and more.
