Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Abigail Todesco. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Abigail, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
I started photography back in 2012, when I was only 12 at the time. My parents got me my first camera and I brought it everywhere with me! I fell in love with the art of creating and capturing the world through my lens.
While I was still young, I knew this passion of mine was real and I started submitting my work to magazines, press, etc. and I ended up getting published in Photographer’s Forum “Best of Photography 2013” when I was 13 years old. After this, I continued to take photos, but focused on my future and what I thought would be my “real job” in healthcare. After all, photography is unstable and is just a hobby, right?
Soon after going to college in Boston for nutrition and dietetics, I realized that I couldn’t have been more wrong! Everyone is created for a purpose, and it was made clear to me that photography was mine.
I transferred schools, switched my major to photography and some digital marketing courses, and started my business on Cape Cod. At first I would take every client that came my way to diversify my portfolio and reach more clients, but I soon found out that capturing love stories (couples and elopements) and working in the fashion industry as a portrait photographer is my love. An additional thing that sets me apart in my industry is my passion for capturing movement through motion blur, grain, and shooting on film.
Today, I can say I’m a huge advocate for doing what you love and running with it. We are all created with a unique, God-given purpose and it would be a shame to let that go to waste!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hi friends! My name is Abbey Todesco and I’m a film/ digital photographer located in New England – specifically local to the Cape and Islands in MA.
I call myself a ‘professional third-wheel’ because I get to capture love through my lens in the most beautiful places! I place an emphasis on photographing authenticity, and capturing motion in my images.
I have a heart for film photography, and use this old-school shooting method in all of my sessions!
The main clients I work with are portraits/ individuals, couples, and photographing elopements.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Finding fulfillment in your work and what you offer the world around you is so important. I initially thought that photography was only meant to be a hobby, but little did I know that being a photographer is what I was created to be for the long haul.
I find so much joy, peace and fulfillment in capturing my clients in an authentic, artistic way, and I wouldn’t change it for the world.
In terms of what I find the most rewarding, I would have to say that forming bonds and friendships with my clients is my favorite part of my job. I love connecting with others in an authentic way, and I love seeing the joy my photos bring my clients upon delivery!
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I wish I knew how powerful having your own creative voice is when I first started my business. I would look up to photographers who have huge clienteles, are booked up years in advance and have the most beautiful edits and wanted SO badly to be like them! I would convince myself that my own voice isn’t right (or isn’t worthy of being booked) just because it didn’t look like someone else’s who was doing well.
This delayed the progression of me finding my true editing style, shooting style and how to run my business successfully for ME.
Once you find your true voice as an artist, it will be a game changer in terms of attracting clients you vibe with and it will simplify your workflow (I second guessed my edits WAY too much when I was first starting out because I didn’t know my style yet!).
