Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Abigail Strange. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Abigail , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s jump to the end – what do you want to be remembered for?
The legacy I’m trying to build is one of literature, language, and light. To illustrate comes from the Latin root of ‘light’, and I think that’s a very apt way to describe what true creators leave behind- a world a little less dark. If all I accomplish in my lifetime is to spread a little light by way of my books, or illustrations, than that’s a legacy enough for me. We don’t leave behind thriving companies or a statues of ourselves in gold; we leave behind the hearts we change, and the souls we touch. That’s what I want to be remembered for.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Abigail Strange, and this all started as a joke; what if instead of publishing my book, I built a website for it instead? Not an authors webpage, or a writers blog– a website that covered all the functions of a paper back printed book, but with a little twist…
I started writing when I was a bit younger, back when I was fed up with how many good stories and concepts were ruined by trends and publishing houses. Since then, my passion for writing comes from my desire to create good stories that encourage, educate, and entertain every person they touch.
From a young age, I knew that making money as a writer would be hard, (and it is) but with things like artist support websites and patreon-like platforms, I can offer my craft and writing to anyone, not to mention that the website where I publish my stories is completely free.
What sets my writing and art apart from others is not skill, or even professionalism, but soul. I think I am not the only one who thinks that the modern age we live in provides cheap, short-lived satisfactory pieces of media with no essence. Stories are for teaching, stories are for entertainment, and stories are for provoking thoughts you wouldn’t have thought of on your own. My own writing, although I am far from the great masters of our century, weaves both epic and serious into comedy and heart.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, the feeling of reward comes from two places. Firstly, the most rewarding aspect of my craft is listening to the stories and messages of the reader’s I’ve touched somehow. Creative work can be a dark, lonely sort of road that can span on for miles, but those messages, those voices, they act as little beacons of light along the path. Warming and encouraging, those messages remind me that I write and create for others just as much as myself.
Secondly, I find being organized, and punctual with my deadlines to be one of the most rewarding experiences! Strange as it sounds, it’s true!
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Many lessons I had to unlearn to truly embrace my craft, but the biggest one of them all was that I needed to get everything right at first. And while do our best to provide good services and products, there needs to be a little human leeway. We are all just people, after all, and I think I was truly freed up to write and create the more I realized that if I never made any bad decisions, I wouldn’t know the difference for a good one! Now I’m five years into creating my own corner of books and art, (and still making some bad art) but now that I can have grace with myself, my journey is a happier one.
