We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Abigail Mulonas a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Abigail, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
A lot of photography quotes come from the session, editing time, and final images produced. One thing that I love to do with photography is capturing as many photos as possible. I will never set a limit on how many final images I will upload, as I will always edit every single picture that deserves to be edited.
My favorites may or may not be the clients favorite, and vice versa. I always want everyone to have the opportunity of viewing every picture and having the liberty of choosing which ones they love the most.
Abigail, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Abigail Mulonas and I’m 22 years old. I went to Specs Howard School of Media Arts and majored in Broadcast Media Arts and Communications. After college, I completed an internship in event planning, which used a lot of my skillset in different areas. This internship taught me so much about communication on a professional level, and I learned the ins and outs of large scale events. However, at the same company and is my current position, I was offered a position on the Talent Acquisition team as a recruiter.
While HR had never been in my wheelhouse before, my experience with broadcasting and communications shined through when speaking with people all day and working with a team. It began to be a job that I found myself enjoying the work I was doing, even if it wasn’t what my degree was centered around.
Although I love my work and team, my true passion is anything creative. Photography has always been a hobby and interest of mine, ever since high school. I had never pursued photography professionally, as it felt intimidating, given the type of work and how many people are photographers. However, I started to take professional pictures of family. This started off as graduation photos or a simple headshot. Quickly after, I started to take more photos of friends, acquaintances, and even friends of friends, expanding my clientele. These range from graduation, engagement, proposals, maternity shoots, etc. and has only expanded moving forward.
I am still getting my feet in the ground with navigating more of a professional route of photography, but have never been happier to do something that I’m so passionate about. I have created an Instagram @candidsbyab and will be launching a website shortly.
Each person I work with has a different perspective, image, and want with their photos, which always brings a challenge both taking and editing. I want someone to love the photos I take. I value every piece of inspiration for what this vision looks like for them and feedback to make their product look the way they want.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Although cliche, it’s all about who you know. When I was in college, all my professors would never miss a class without reminding us to network with each other or in any opportunity they could. Almost all of my clients have been referrals, friend of a friend, coworker, etc. All it takes is for one person to recommend you for things to start rolling.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I am incredibly humble when it comes to my work. I can appreciate and acknowledge my work, but never want to assume others feel the same. However, when clients get their pictures back and genuinely love what they see, it is an indescribable feeling. There is something about if they post their photos online, it makes me feel proud to be the one to have taken and shared that with them.
